Paul Feigelfeld @paulfeigelfeld: The Dork Enlightenment. Technology and Fascism; why Art is responsible; and how it can respond
Moderation: Axel Stockburger

Academy of Fine Arts Vienna @akbild, Aula,
Schillerplatz 3, 1010 Vienna

The proximity between the tech industry and authoritarian politics cannot be explained by ideology alone. This lecture reads it as a question of architecture. It asks which theories, forms and images prepared this proximity and made it thinkable. One line runs from German media theory through Nick Land and neoreaction to Silicon Valley. Another reaches back to the avant-gardes that anticipated the rituals of fascism. What art has to answer for, and what it can do about it, emerges from historical strata between Futurism and post-internet art and from the counter-strata of cyberfeminism. Countercultural techniques are already being developed, but this has to be a shared effort.

Paul Feigelfeld is a cultural and media scholar. After studying Cultural Studies and Computer Science in Berlin, he held various positions at the Centre for Digital Cultures Lüneburg, the Art University and the University of Basel, the Strelka Institute Moscow, the University of Applied Arts Vienna, and the University of Vienna. From 2021 to 2024, he held the professorship for Knowledge Cultures in the Digital Age at the Institute for Design Research at Braunschweig University of Art (HBK) and is a Visiting Professor at the Chair of Media Theories at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

At the herbst deathmatches, opposing positions go head-to-head. One question, two participants: they debate, challenge each other and defend their arguments – and in the end, the audience raises red or green flags to decide who has the more convincing answers.

@ellakroneberger knows: Klaus Hünig from my hometown Würzburg is often associated with the development and popularization of modern eclipse glasses. As an amateur astronomer and inventor, he developed a simple cardboard viewing device using special solar-filter material. His glasses became particularly famous during the total solar eclipse of August 11, 1999, which was visible across Germany.

Millions of these glasses were produced and sold, helping people observe the eclipse safely. Hünig did not invent the idea of using filters to look at the Sun, but his inexpensive and practical design played an important role in making safe solar observation accessible to the general public. Cute.
