For a long time, I’ve held many experiences close to my heart not out of modesty alone, but from a desire to honor the gifts I’ve received without ever sounding boastful. Yet recently, someone reminded me that I have a way with words, and perhaps it’s time I use them to share. As summer draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on a time that was nothing short of transformative.

This past year, I was deeply fortunate to receive both a grant and multiple scholarships through VCU and the summer intensives I attended, allowing me to further my research in choreography. These opportunities opened doors to immersive learning and creative exploration, and I’m currently preparing a presentation that encapsulates this journey.
One of the most enriching chapters of my summer unfolded at the Bates Dance Festival, where I spent three weeks surrounded by extraordinary artists and educators. I had the privilege of studying with Paul Mattson, Shayla-Vie Jenkins, David Dorfman, Rennie Harris, Noel Price, and members of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. Performing with the company during their Friday night show marking the beginning of their national tour—was a moment I’ll carry with me always. I also collaborated with David Dorfman and fellow dancers in a piece that celebrated collective artistry. The festival was alive with dance, music, and the kind of performances that leave you changed.

I traveled to Italy, where I danced under the sun with Alambrado Danza. Learning from Tracey Kofford, Monica Baroni, Ilaria Landi, Brigitte Vittur, Luca Fattori, Jennie Grimes, and Denise Purvis was a gift beyond measure. Dancing overseas with my closest friends and meeting new ones along the way was a dream realized, an experience that etched itself into my soul.

From the cobblestone streets of Italy to the studios of Bates, my summer was a mosaic of art, culture, and connection. I witnessed beauty in motion, performed in spaces that pulsed with energy, and expanded my artistic toolbox in ways I never imagined. I’m endlessly grateful to my parents for their unwavering support, and to my VCU Dance professors, especially MK for their mentorship and belief in me. @vcuartsdance
