No need to go further, thanks! 😜😉

Life lesson: people can say mean, terrible things when they are hurting. Although that isn’t an excuse, it helps to remember that not every harsh word is about you. Sometimes it’s just someone hurting out loud.

Things to try if this happens to you:
✨ Pause before responding
✨ Name the behavior not the emotion - I recognize that you are frustrated/upset/etc and I would be open to discussing ways we can move forward but not with hurtful language
✨ Exit if/when needed - This conversation isn’t productive right now. Let’s take the day, write out your concerns and let’s see if we can discuss this tomorrow once we’ve had some time to fully acknowledge our feelings and any problems we would like to work out.

💙 The Heart of the Front Desk

Being a veterinary receptionist isn’t just about phone calls and bookings, it’s about people. 🐾

According to Melinda van der Vlugt, some of the hardest moments come when you’re the counsellor, the listener, and the comforter for pet parents in crisis.

Because our pets aren’t just pets… they’re family. And when a family member is unwell, emotions run high. 💔

Reception teams often carry the weight of guiding, reassuring, and supporting clients through some of their most stressful days.

A gentle reminder: the smiling face at the front desk is also holding space for so many heavy moments. Let’s celebrate them for the heart work they do. 🌟

Every veterinary team is unique.
But one thing I’ve learned as a relief vet, moving from clinic to clinic and hospital to hospital, is that a dedicated receptionist makes all the difference.

They’re the first impression, the calm in the chaos, the schedulers, communicators, and care coordinators all rolled into one. They’re not just teammates. They’re the glue that holds the day together.

A passionate veterinary receptionist is a vet’s best friend.
They help us thrive. They help our clients feel seen.
They help our patients get the care they need with compassion and clarity.

So during Veterinary Receptionist Week, I just want to say THANK YOU.

Your work is essential. Your role is powerful. And you’re appreciated, deeply.

Tag a veterinary receptionist who made your day better.
Someone who helped you feel like part of a great team. Let's also make sure we continue lifting our teammates up throughout the year and not just this week!!! 💙
