🌺 Day One of APCG 2026 — Hilo, Hawaiʻi 🌺 We’re officially underway! Our first day in beautiful Hilo, Hawaiʻi, began with the Mōhalu Moon and a heartfelt Kīpaepae Welina ~ Welcoming Ceremony at Hawaiʻi Community College’s Manono Campus. From the Hawaiʻi Keynote to Huakaʻi ~ Excursions, the day was filled with learning, connection, place, and ʻike. 🌊🌴 And to close out the day, we’ll gather downtown at Hale Kanikapila for an optional evening of music, community, and aloha. 🎶 Mahalo to everyone who helped us begin APCG 2026 in such a meaningful way. 🌎 Celebrating 91 Years of APCG! 🎉 Today, October 15, 2026, we celebrate the 91st anniversary of the founding of the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers (APCG) and the remarkable legacy that began in 1935. Our story began with a group of pioneering geographers who shared a vision: to build a community where geographers could come together to share knowledge, explore the landscapes and people of the Pacific Coast, support one another, and advance the discipline of geography. We are deeply grateful to our founders and founding members whose curiosity, dedication, and commitment created an organization that has endured for more than nine decades. Their vision laid the groundwork for generations of geographers, educators, students, and scholars to connect, learn, and inspire one another. From the pages of our very first 1935 Yearbook to the work being carried forward today, the spirit of APCG remains strong. 91 years later, we honor where we began, celebrate the community we have built, and look toward the future with gratitude and purpose. Field trip with Biogeographer Dr. Presiado to the see first ever confirmed Olive Ridley sea turtle nests on the US West Coast. 🌊 This is an amazing example of species possibly expanding their ranges northward. Global warming and El Niño are likely both drivers of these beaches becoming nesting habitat. 🌎 These nests are well signed- but on busy beaches. Interested to see how many hatchlings survive. Geography is everywhere - get outside and take a look 👀.

APCG Women’s Network Spotlight: Dr. Deborah Elliott-Fisk 👩‍🎓🌎 The APCG Women’s Network proudly recognizes Dr. Deborah Elliott-Fisk, Professor Emeritus at UC Davis, for her extraordinary contributions to geography, biogeography, mentorship, and field research. 👏🍃 Among her many accomplishments as a prominent biogeographer, Dr. Elliott-Fisk co-founded the APCG Women’s Network in 1984, expanded long-term ecological field research across California as Director of the University of California Natural Reserve System, and mentored numerous geography students and junior faculty throughout her career. Known affectionately as “Debbie” to her students, she offered her students adventurous field trips, a can-do attitude, kindness, and an example of a smart and capable female geographer.💪🥾 The APCG Women’s Network celebrates Dr. Deborah Elliott-Fisk for her lasting impact as a geography student at CSUF @csufgeography.environment & UC Boulder @cu.geography, as a professor of geography at UW @uw_geology_geophysics and UC Davis @ucdavisgradstudies inspiring future generations of geographers. 💙Dr. Rhea Presiado @pcc_geography nominated Debbie for this spotlight.
