Having pockets full of nuts and bolts has its pros and cons. When fixing bikes you never know when you might need a random pocket bolt, however carrying them around may well have created a pocket hole that might need some attention.

Here at @wastesmiths repair and mending is a core part of what we get up to every month. We care about keeping things in active use for longer, and repairing what we have is a great way to put that into action.

On 11th July we have our monthly Mend With Friends, which is our monthly clothes mending social on a Saturday morning. These socials are an opportunity to put something in your calendar to socially motivate you to tackle some of those clothing items in your mending pile. They are an opportunity to learn skills from others, enjoy a cuppa tea and put the world to rights.

Then on Saturday 25th July we’ll be offering our monthly Dr Bike session that thanks to support from @wearecyclinguk means basic repairs on your bike can be fixed for free by our expert mechanic. It’s first come first served so get there early and enjoy the delights of @st_saviours_yard while you wait! New things are opening every week including a very exciting new offer from @funkyvits which is going to be very popular over the summer months. Check out the @funkyvits socials to see all the deliciousness they’re cooking up.

See you soon at the yard 🚲♻️💚🌍

Wastesmiths monthly Dr Bikes are now supported by @wearecyclinguk, which means that your bike can get fixed for free, while it’s being repaired you can enjoy some of the delights that @st_saviours_yard has to offer like buns from @sod.bakery, pizza from @eastdough, craft beer from @sir_tobys_nr3 and zero-waste shopping at @allplanetkind.

The next Dr Bike is scheduled for Saturday 27th June from 10am until 1pm. Basic repairs are free and offered on a first come, first served basis. No matter how rusty or rattly your bike is, you’re very welcome and all we want in return for your free bike fix is an email address to show our funder that we fixed your bike.

See you on Saturday 27th June 🚲💚🌍

Our bicycle related offer here at @wastesmiths is going to have a slightly different flavour for 2026, now that we have a base in Norwich at @st_saviours_yard.

We’ll still be planning regular Dr Bikes offering free basic repairs thanks to Cycling UK funding. In fact, the first one is on Saturday 23rd May from 10am until 1pm. These Dr Bikes work on a first come first served basis, and the cool thing about offering free basic bike repairs at St Saviours Yard is that while you’re waiting for your bicycle to be fixed you can enjoy fabulous pizza from @eastdough, extraordinary buns from @sod.bakery, fancy beers from @sir_tobys_nr3 and zero-waste shopping at @allplanetkind. If you’d like to make a day of it we have a Hack Your Wardrobe session in the afternoon supporting you to add pockets to pocketless garments.

Okay, back to what our broader bicycle shaped shenanigans look like in 2026. We’ve been conscious for a while that bikes are a fabulous resource of components for so many more of our projects. We’ve seen pedal powered sewing machines that could be interesting for our @wewearthetrousers collective, and we’ve seen pedal powered shredders that would be so useful for our @preciousplasticeast project. Now that we have a Norwich base we’re keen to more actively explore some of these pedal powered builds.

Given this new vision for this area of our work, the My Bike Repair name didn’t really fit anymore, so we’re now going to do bike stuff under @pedalpoweredprojects. Right on cue the Norfolk & Norwich Festival asked us to build a hanging installation, and a bicycle rim seemed like the perfect structure for it. So our Great Yarmouth @make_grow_mend group helped us build a piece of art suspended from a bit of a bicycle. We’re launching a Norwich @make_grow_mend group this month that may get involved with some of the pedal powered builds. So come along if you’re curious.

Get in touch for more information or come see us on Saturday 23rd May between 10am and 1pm at St Saviours Yard 🌍💚🚲

SCHOOL CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS 🏆

We are really excited to be running our 2026 Muddy Monsters School Cycling Championships on Tuesday 30th June in Eaton Park in Norwich.

Schools are invited to enter teams of 10 pupils (5 boys/5 girls) from Years 5 and/or 6. The event is suitable for pupils who can already confidently ride a bike. No previous racing experience is required.

Riders will take part in three races: Skills Race, Sprint Race, Endurance Race. They will score points from each race which will be combined and added to their teams mates to give an overall team score.

Bikes are provided, so all pupils need to bring is their own helmet (we have some helmets we can lend pupils who don’t have their own).

To enter - www.littleriders.co.uk/schoolscyclingchampionships/

Entry deadline - Tuesday 16th May (5pm)

CHANGES: So it felt like time to tidy things up, sort stuff out and be ready for action in 2026. The Bike Club run by @sprowstonyouthproject in partnership with @wastesmiths has outgrown sharing an Instagram account with other Norwich bicycle shaped shenanigans, so we’re making this a dedicated Sprowston Youth Bike Club account.

We still have big plans for other bicycle shenanigans in north Norwich, including the regular Dr Bikes, but also experimental event formats, and Heath Robinson pedal powered machine builds. If you’re curious to follow that, then hop over the @pedalpoweredprojects and stay connected 🚲💚🌍
