Hi, I’m Josh!

The ‘Dr’ bit is optional but it turns out I’m not the only Josh on Instagram, and that handle was taken…

I’m here because I want to shout about the exciting work I get to be a part of, and the wonderful people I get to do it with!

I wear lots of different hats in the worlds of art and academia, all of which specialise in creating work with, by, and for people with learning disabilities. It’s rather difficult to define exactly what I do but I tend to settle on:

🎭 Theatre Director, 💡Producer, 🎨 Arts Facilitator, 📣 Workshop Leader, 🎙️Speaker, 🖋️ Writer, 🌐 Researcher, ⚙️ Curator, 🎓 Lecturer… but that is an awfully long job title, so let’s go with

✨Disability Specialist Theatre Maker (+ extras) ✨

Currently, I…

…lead theatre projects for the @freewheelerstheatre, and run their youth company.

…am the exhibition curator for the Us & Them historical asylum project.

…teach drama and other important courses in additional needs schools with companies like @peerproductions.

…give visiting lectures on learning disability & creative arts at university level.

…run a disability theatre charity called Play in a Week.

…don’t sleep much.

I want this page to be a mixed bag. A scrap book of all the fascinatingly diverse projects I find myself working on and a spring board to find more. A portfolio of my research and academic writing, with snippets of lecturing. A platform for the sensational artists with disabilities I work alongside whose voices are often overlooked, or ignored.

Building a community is beyond important in this industry! So, to other creatives, researchers, arts managers etc: let’s get in touch!

To that end (and because I was told to make this more personal), here are a few things about me: I have an ‘energetic’ dog called Cali, (featured in the corner), and an odd cat called Arty. I like folk music, hiking, and metal detecting. I play the bagpipes, and could fly a plane before I could drive a car. I have no strong feelings either way about marmite, and I’m not in the least bit fussy about how I have cups of tea.

Talk soon,

-(Dr) Josh This post features a

young gentleman (Josh), on the left side of the screen. He in his late 20s, with brunette hair that has a bit of volume on the top and is swaying to the left, and a well groomed moustache. He's sitting casually, with a hand in his pocket and has a light smile, that creates a crinkle on the right side of his mouth. He's in a soft, mustard coloured sweater with a green shirt collar poking out the top, and earthy coloured tweed style trousers. He's sat next to a boarder collie, (Cali), who is looking content but tired. They are both in a cosy shed, decorated with fairy lights and carpets. The mood is soft, warm and inviting. You can't see it in the picture, but they've been enjoying a warm cup of tea and the weather whilst working.

A little bit about me! From acting to collaborative theatre writing, to poetry, back to playwrighting and now acting! (A full circle moment!) why not come and see my show?? 🗓️6th June 3pm
📍Tobacco Factory Theatre, Spielman Theatre

This Show Is About Death explores navigating complicated grief without a map.

I will be sharing the day with Rhys, who will be presenting his show @a_very_difficult_person at 7pm

Both performances sit under Writers Lab Presents, a showcase of work from writers connected to the Tobacco Factory Theatre’s Writers Lab.

Getting a space right starts with being able to see it clearly.

These early sketch renders are part of how we work through the design with our clients, exploring what the space could be, testing ideas, and making sure what looks good on a floor plan actually feels right in three dimensions. For @peerproductions, that process has been a really important part of shaping their new performing arts studios into something that works for the people who'll be in it every day.

With funding now in place, we're moving into RIBA Stages 3 and 4 with Peer, and these early sketches are the foundation everything builds from. Exciting times ahead for a charity doing really important work.

Some of the most meaningful projects we work on start with a simple question: what would this space look like if it could really do what you need it to?

That's where we began with the team at @peerproductions, a youth arts charity based in Woking using theatre to genuinely change the lives of young people. We worked with them on early-stage design and feasibility proposals for new performing arts studios, offices and breakout spaces, giving them something considered and credible to take into funding conversations.

We're really pleased to share that Peer have now secured that funding. Seeing the process go full circle, from initial drawings to a funded project, is exactly why we value this kind of work. We can't wait to see it come to life.

Showcase was truly unforgettable! I loved finally getting to perform with all the incredibly talented and passionate folk I have trained and toured alongside this year. Now that my time at Peer is over I can truly see what an impact every single person there has had on my life, and I know I will be there cheering everyone on as we all take our next steps 🫶🏻

Loads of love to all and look out for lots of graduation photos very soon!

'Man Up' by @ninalemon

This play has been such an honour to be a part of! I've loved every step of the process and couldn't have asked for a more incredible team to go on this journey with.

I can't quite believe that the tour is all done now or that we performed the show for over 4,000 young people! We've had such amazing responses from school; teachers and students alike. I really hope this play has done it's part in tackling the rise of misogyny and incel culture in young men, that we've helped people feel seen and started some productive dialogue.

Hats off to Nina and the devising team for all their hard work creating this play and thank you to everyone else who has supported the process.

Really looking forward to getting this one filmed soon...I'm not done with Lottie and Miss Windell yet! 🫶🏻
