@artyouhungry approaches embroidery with a painter’s eye, building figurative portraits through layers of color and texture.

In the Penland textiles studio, students learned how stitch direction can create form and texture, how colors can be matched and blended, and how felted wool roving can add dimension to embroidered works.

It was a delight to learn with Nneka (@artyouhungry) and to watch each student make the process their own. Embroidery asks you to slow down and pay attention: four days of stitching, experimenting, learning something new, and enjoying the first views of fall from the studio.

another trip up the mountain to meet old + new friends and to learn things about myself I’ve forgotten

thank you @paolo_arao for the invitation to join you again in Lily Loom 🫶

‘Take A Chance’ was a whirlwind short session in which we used dice to guide creative decision making through drawing

I mostly drew, rested, and drank lots of banquet

I am incredibly proud of all the work that the students in my workshop made this past week @penlandschool

I’m lucky to have worked and shared space with such a thoughtful, engaging, and wonderful group of people. The atmosphere of curiosity and experimentation and taking chances was a pleasure to be around 🎲

I want to extend a very special and heartfelt thank you to the brilliant artist @kimberly__english for agreeing to be my studio assistant again! 🙏🏽❤️🙏🏽

I learned to sew last spring as an exercise in zooming into materiality… to move my creative practice from the mostly conceptual and 2-dimensional to something tactile and precise. A challenge for myself and my big dumb fingers. A return to making physical art after a long time away.

Working with textiles has taught me so much about mutability and permanence, what is essential and what can be altered. In 2025, a series of physical and mental health crises led me to rip out all the seams that held my life in place – including my relationship, my home, and my career. The fabric of self was all that remained. Since that time, I’ve been making clothes that evoke my experience through this change and tumult – raw edges and holes, shapes that defy expectation and sometimes physics. Comfort club-wear to cry in. Mesh as a portal and a barrier.

This summer I built myself a residency at @PenlandSchool of Craft and got to be one with fabric under the tutelage of the brilliant @homebodytextiles and @blkshe for a month. Here’s just a few of the things I made and some process pics. Thank u everyone ♥️ more 2 come

Last month, right after graduating, I had the amazing opportunity to take @johnpaulmorabito weaving beyond the binary class at @penlandschool , I cant describe how incredible this experience was. From discovering whats possible with a loom, working day in and day out in the beautiful weaving studio facing the mountains, and meeting amazing crafters and artists, this trip was a much needed reset. Thank you to all who made this such a great time, especially John Paul for hosting such an eye opening course with the assistance of @jesseesatt . I hope to be back in the mountains soon ⭐️
