NEW UPDATE: A New Victory for Deliveristas!

Since we organized, fought, and won the nation’s first minimum pay standard, Deliveristas have earned more than $2 billion in additional earnings, according to a new @hellodcwp report. This is a huge victory for workers and proof that companies like DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub can afford to pay delivery workers more while continuing to grow their businesses in NYC.

While we celebrate this victory, the fight isn’t over. We will continue organizing to challenge the exploitative algorithmic systems corporations use to squeeze our labor, put profits over our safety, and treat workers as disposable. We’re fighting to end unjust deactivations, win job security, and make this job safer for every Deliverista.

Mayor Mamdani ran on the campaign promise that he would protect the First Amendment rights of New Yorkers by disbanding the notoriously violent Strategic Response Group (SRG), a unit in the NYPD. NYC is now several months into his mayoral term, and his office continues to approve SRG deployment at protests and demonstrations. All the while, City Council Member Oswald Feliz continues to block a hearing for the Communities United to Reject Brutality (CURB) Act, a bill specifically designed to ban the SRG's violent tactics. ⁠

The NYPD's Strategic Response Group (SRG) has consistently threatened, attacked, and arrested protesters. SRG officers have demonstrated a clear pattern of targeting people of color and using excessive force - and the city has spent millions on legal settlements stemming from their misconduct.⁠

Fortunately, there's a bill to help fix this: the CURB Act. Unfortunately, it's languishing at City Council, because Public Safety Chair Oswald Feliz won't schedule the bill for a hearing, and the Council can't vote on a bill without one. Comment "CURB" to take action now.

RALLY TO FUND $15M FOR LGBTQIA+ IMMIGRANT LEGAL SERVICES NOW!

LGBTQIA+ Immigrants need access to legal services quickly that affirm their identities.

The time is now, our neighbors cannot wait until next year. The @caribbeanequalityproject with @nyctransqueercoalition and @lgbtqiacaucus are advocating for $15M in the FY27 Budget. We are requesting the funds to be split :

$7.5M to a new City Council Speaker Initiative to fund non-profits providing legal services to the community

&

$7.5M to the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs to expand and enhance services specifically for LGBTQIA+ Immigrants.

Our new report, developed through an algorithmic analysis with @cunysph , shows:

96% — delivery was their only job.
98% — delivery provided at least half their income.
53% — were their family’s sole source of income.

Let’s talk about the root cause of unsafe streets: the lack of safe infrastructure for Deliveristas and bike riders.

While the @nyccouncil focuses on deploying NYPD and imposing more punitive measures on delivery workers and bike riders, the infrastructure crisis continues to be ignored.

Here’s a photo of a Deliverista working on 3rd Avenue in the Bronx, where there is no bike lane. Like him, thousands of Deliveristas are forced to ride alongside cars every day, risking their lives to earn a living.

Deliveristas are workers—not criminals. We know what our streets need because we work on them every day.

@nyccouncil put delivery workers at the table, invest in safe infrastructure, and build solutions with us.

A must-read from @gothamist — On September 30, the NYC Council held a committee hearing on micromobility, with 23 pieces of legislation presented. But the hearing failed to address the root causes of micromobility and street safety.

Some bills focus on deploying more NYPD enforcement and giving apps greater oversight power without meaningful worker intervention or accountability—potentially giving companies too much power to control workers’ conditions.

At the same time, workers are not being given the rights and power they need to challenge algorithmic controls that push them to speed and contribute to injuries and psychological distress.

As Cellou Balde, @losdeliveristasunidos_ny delivery worker leader , said:

“You have to choose your safety or losing your income,” he said. “The apps push workers to speed with tight deadlines and bundled orders.”

“We want street safety more than anybody else,” he said, “because I’m outside risking my life.”

We urge @speakermenin and @cmshaunabreu —to bring delivery workers to the table and give them a meaningful role in shaping the policies that affect their safety and livelihoods.

Our city needs safe bike infrastructure, stronger delivery worker rights, real corporate accountability, and a just transition toward safer micromobility.

The pied-à-terre tax is an important step to address our city’s budget crisis and fund important public services like childcare, affordable housing, city-owned grocery stores, public transportation, schools and libraries.

The ultra wealthy are fighting hard against this popular tax. The pied-à-terre tax is on second homes valued over $5 million and will only affect the wealthiest homeowners, many of whom don’t even live in NYC.

Yesterday, supporters of taxing the rich rallied before the city council hearing on the proposed tax.

Support the movement to make sure the wealthy pay their fair share to support the majority of people in NYC.

WE WON! 🎉 The final NYC budget includes a $1.6M expansion for the NYC Commission on Human Rights to enforce our civil rights protections, including the Fair Chance for Housing Act.

This means more education and real enforcement power so New Yorkers know their rights and can hold violators accountable.

Thank you to City Council for prioritizing this funding in budget negotiations.

Civil rights protections only work when they're enforced. Today, NYC invested in making that real.
