THE COMPANY WE KEEP.

The people we’ve met. The rooms we’ve found ourselves in. The conversations that have turned into something more.

From day one, CLUBMERA has been about more than what’s in the glass.

Good people.
Good company.
And plenty more to come.

And to think this is only the very beginning.

CLUBMERA. FOR WHEREVER THE NIGHT GOES.

“We need them in a world that’s become so disconnected from nature and so digital. This is our way of reclaiming that,” said Sophie when I asked why the world needs carpets now more than ever. Made from natural materials and coloured with natural dyes, traditional carpets are tactile objects we can touch and feel.

During the Safavid dynasty, Persians wove garden symbology into their carpets to bring their outside spaces into their homes, letting the garden live indoors with them all year round, even during the cold seasons.

We shot Sophie for this editorial at Thames Carpets, the beautiful carpet business she runs with her father in Henley-on-Thames, and it felt just like that: like being in her home, surrounded by stories not just of her own family and the shop, but of the people, animals and places woven into the carpets themselves.

With our next perediza exchange taking place tomorrow, I wanted to look back at our first live event from February!

We printed extracts from Clarice Lispector’s ‘The Hour of the Star’, laid our phones to one side and dived into an enriching discussion about identity, femininity, philosophy and language.

I recall feeling slightly nervous, both in selecting an extract that would give a group enough to chat about and in cohosting a reading event. Buuut it turns out when you are working alongside such a fabulous team (both near and far <3), you actually have nothing to fear! 🧡🗒️🖋️

India, our newsletter editor, on why you should step outside and submit to the upcoming issue V of perediza: the garden issue.

The glue stick began to dry up but still go gooey. I sat outside in the thirty-degree heat to think about the garden.

Scouring some old magazines for cutouts, I was initially looking for different shades of green, textures and reflections of nature. But I knew I could look deeper - for not all gardens are green and overrun with plants.

Two works caught my attention.

Duan Jianyu’s 2023 painting ‘Yúqiáo (The Fisherman and The Woodcutter) No.2’ - the Guangzhou-based artist, bridges the historic with the modern by looking at the classical Chinese motif of the fisherman and the woodcutter, a pair of figures appearing in Chinese literati painting and philosophical writings since the eleventh century.

Ed Alcock’s 2022 photograph of ‘Fathia et Thierry’ - the Franco-British photographer spent six months documenting the daily lives of locals living within 5km of nuclear power stations in France, the country with more reactors than any other in Europe.

Jianyu and Alcock’s works expanded my thinking about gardens. Noticing beads of sweat building on my back, I got up to get more cold tea.

The interpretations of a garden are many. Sculpture gardens. Weeds. Our connection to nature being severed as we spend more times on our screens than ever before. Do you grow food in your garden? Tell me what can you smell. Should we be growing faux flowers? Ideas of self cultivation, supply and growth. Important things like compost and recycling. Tending to your close community. What if you have a nuclear power station in your back yard? And then finally, what do you wear when watering the garden? A sensible coat, knickers, wellies, or nothing?

Submissions to contribute to perediza’s Garden Issue V are still open till 28 May and we welcome anyone looking to interpret the garden in their own way to submit.

a pleasure to be joining @perediza as their Growth & Partnerships Lead at such an exciting time 💌

last month, perediza presented The Philosophy Edit I: an evening of discourse hosted in partnership with Frieze Connect x Shoreditch Arts Club @friezeconnect @shoreditchartsclub_

in an age of constant flux, what occurs when art philosophy is explored outside the university? how is meaning and value understood, critiqued and redefined?

the accompanying limited-edition perediza x Frieze Connect publication, The Philosophy Edit: Marginalia, is available to purchase on the perediza bazaar - link in @perediza bio! 💌
