What an incredible weekend at RCA Ada – Oklahoma!
Thank you to everyone who joined us on the mats for our seminar – great energy, great Jiu-Jitsu, and a true family atmosphere. This is what RCA is all about.
A special thank you to Head Professor Jeanelle Van Buskirk for her outstanding work, leadership, and for organizing an amazing belt test. Your dedication to your students and to the growth of RCA Ada is truly inspiring.
And a huge congratulations to two dedicated leaders who embody loyalty, discipline, and the true spirit of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu:
Professor Tony Herbert – promoted to 1st Degree Black Belt
Professor Scott Duren – promoted to 2nd Degree Black Belt
These promotions reflect not just time on the mat, but character, commitment to the team, and years of hard work teaching and representing Jiu-Jitsu the right way.
Ada, thank you for welcoming me so well. The future is bright – let’s keep growing together!
Oss!

What a night, and day, and weekend! We made our return to Madison Square Garden Infosys Theatre yesterday, this time for @flexfightseries , to fight for the ISKA New York State Featherweight MuayThai title. It's always been very difficult to find opponents for @briamcck in the regional scene as it's a relatively shallow division anywhere you go. This has required us to travel over seas and fight in national tournaments multiple times to find girls, but this time an opponent was brought to us from Iowa.

This was a showdown between the TBA champ from Iowa versus the East coast WKA champ in Bria. We both believe in taking on the hard fights while also selecting opponents who will force you to grow in new ways so that you don't become trapped in one style. This girl has been destroying people with a powerful right and no one wants to fight her, so we were excited!

The work our girl puts in is second to none, and is basically the all consuming focus of her life. What is nice is that at this level I'm not simply dictating coaching to someone, it's an entirely collaborative affair of both research, game planning and consistent feedback. She keeps me just as on point and aware of her situation and thought process as I do both in camp and during that fight, and the groove we've come into over the last two years is nothing short of technical harmony.

Thank you for all the support, I know many people who did buy tickets didn't come out because of the crazy weather but still supported from home. My phone exploded that night! Thanks for those who could make it, for Bria's sponsors, and all the training partners who suffered her beatings leading up to this fight.

Special thanks to ISKA who gave us this shot at their state title! Next up we will be heading overseas for the ISKA World Championships in Spain to see if we can upgrade from a Junior world champ to a full blown adult champ!

A tough weekend at nationals this time for sure, nobody in Bria or victors division, Aiden, Katrina and Quinn moving up in weight, and Jason being sick, does not make for smooth sailing haha. We still pulled off some great wins, with Quinn having an absolute war and on day two Ben took the national title in the open class kickboxing division improving his record to 12-0 despite the most hilarious head gear malfunction in his first fight.

The hardest fight may have been Bria and Katrina versus the bedroom door at our Airbnb. The door won, 30-27. They literally could not open it after blocking themselves in their bedroom.

Better photos to come once they release everything in a week or two.

Two weeks later and I’m still feeling the energy from Showcase Muay Thai’s first event. Here are a few of my selects from the night. The action, the atmosphere, and the fights made for one hell of a night. Glad I got to be there ringside to capture it. 🥊

Can't wait for the next one!

Yo, listen up - let me tell you somethin’
That look in your eyes? I know that look. That’s not a man who’s tired. That’s a man who’s THINKING. That’s a warrior’s look.
Let me tell you what life is. Life ain’t about how many stripes you got, how many belts, how many years you’ve been on that mat.
The world - it hits HARD, you know that. Jiu-Jitsu taught you that. Life will take you down, put you in side control, make you wanna tap. But it ain’t about how hard you get hit. It’s about how hard you can GET hit, and keep movin’ forward. How much you can take, and keep breathin’, and keep FIGHTIN’.
You got that ring on your hand - that ain’t just metal. That’s years. That’s sweat. That’s every student you lifted up. Every time you got choked and came back the next day. Every time you told someone else “one more round” when you were the one who was tired.
So you look in that mirror, you look at that man right there - you tell him this: “We ain’t done. We got more to teach. More to learn. More to prove.”
Cause champions - real champions - they ain’t made when the bell rings. They’re made in the quiet. When nobody’s watchin’. When it’s just you and your thoughts. That’s where the fight is won.
Now go out there and show ‘em what a lifetime on the mat really means.
Keep punchin’.

I’m about 300 fights into my coaching career. It started slow but nowadays there are so many opportunities and I I have so many fighters that I’m blessed (and cursed) to be on a show just about every weekend. it was so great to be able to fight at home in CT for the second time this year. Until recently we didn’t have a single legit kickboxing/thai show in the state, but that all changed with the recent changes to regulations in the capital. Many people have been involved in getting the gears moving up there and I’ve played a part behind the scenes moving certain people along and helping shows get running.

Mike worked extra hard to get this event to the level it was at, I’m proud of him and his freakish organization skills lol. I hope this is the first of many so I feel less obligated to drive 5-8 hours on a Saturday out of state to find enough matches for my guys.

Congratulations to @voodoochild_mt on his debut win. If you saw this guy spar for the first time he visited my gym you’d be shocked at the difference in his skill now vs then. Turning a wrestler into a striker comes with its own unique challenges, especially in the more traditional Thai rule set where bad habits such as stance and hand placement crop up for wrestlers. But, he came through with flying colors absolutely showcasing (see what I did there?) his hands, kicks and clinch while making the cardio look easy despite hitting the gas harder each round. Excited to see how far he goes now that the pieces are in place!

@divine.jungle had a harder run of things. Having only been with me for 14 months this is third official sanctioned fight and fourth over all in that time period. This time he stepped in against a great guy Richie Vera who actually made his debut at one of my birthday smokers way back in 2018. I knew the bar was high and he’d likely not come out the winner but we are constantly pushing the boundaries of what are guys can handle and he was actually performing significantly better than his previous fights. Theres always going to be a lot to work on but he’s healthy and back in the gym ready to go. Zero concussion symptoms thank god 🙏

Up and on to nationals next!
