𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗖𝗮𝗻’𝘁 𝗕𝗲 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗖𝗮𝗻’𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗲 - Lived experience leadership in the Arts

The first time Cian Parker stepped into a theatre was through a Primary School trip to see Māui.

Growing up in Melville, Hamilton, the arts weren’t part of her everyday world—because they weren’t visible or accessible.

That one experience changed everything.
Today, Cian is General Manager of The Meteor Theatre in Kirikiriroa Hamilton, after a successful career as a performer, writer, director, and storyteller across Aotearoa and internationally.

But her work now is focused on something bigger than the stage.

For many young people, the barrier isn’t talent.
It’s access.

It’s connection.

It’s being part of networks where opportunity actually flows.

And that’s where inequality often lives—not in ability, but in visibility and relationships.

Through youth workshops and strong partnerships with schools and youth development organisations, The Meteor is already working alongside the community to support rangatahi to find voice, confidence, and belonging.
It’s not just a theatre.

It’s part of a wider ecosystem of care, creativity, and connection.

And it shows what becomes possible when arts and community are not treated as separate systems—but as one.

Because when young people see themselves reflected in stories and leadership, something shifts.

They begin to believe they belong.

And that changes everything.
