Tyla Leach is a 26 year old New York City native. She is an alumna of the Rory Meyers College of Nursing, which she graduated from in May 2018 with her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. Her focus is on helping expecting parents have a peaceful, positive and powerful experience during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. She is passionate about educating families in order to allow them to make informed decisions and be active participants in their care. As a queer black woman, her focus is working with low-income, black and brown and/or LGBTQ individuals to increase their access to birth services. She initially worked as a Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse while attending SUNY Downstate, where she pursued her Master’s in Nurse-Midwifery. She hopes to one day get her PhD, focusing on issues of LGBTQ inclusion in birthwork and health practices.

Posted @withregram • @perinatalnyc working in a hospital system I see a complete lack of informed, enthusiastic consent on a daily basis. There is an assumed access to patients body at all times and a lack of consideration for the patient’s time and emotions. Providers are often cold and detached from the birth experience because birth, in their eyes, has become just another medical procedure. That should never be the standard. Also to note that a lot of the language used applies to hospital based systems that are prevalent in NYC - where many patients are encouraged to get epidurals and providers are encouraged to do frequent cervical exams. More to come on why cervical exams aren’t always necessary to assess labor progress!

(Long caption but WORTH THE READ! So excited for our $$$ WINNER 🙏🏽)

As some of you may know, last year for my 37th birthday, I requested to be gifted with donations totaling $370 to grant one Black pregnant birthing body with my birth and postpartum doula services. Many thanks to those who donated as we exceeded our goal with over $400, which will go to our carefully selected recipient. Your funds will help a Black woman gain access to ongoing one-on-one labor support, childbirth education, prenatal visits in preparation for labor, and postpartum support.

You may wonder why this fund-raising effort is specifically for a Black person. As not only a doula, but also as a public health practitioner and educator, it is my duty and calling to serve ALL birthing bodies, irrespective of race, ethnicity, sex assigned at birth, gender identity, etc. However, the data are irrefutable; Black women in NYC are dying at overwhelmingly disproportionate rates (12x to be precise) compared with their White counterparts. What’s worse is that this glaring inequity persists primarily due to PREVENTABLE conditions before and during childbirth, coupled with systemic racism in healthcare settings.

Thanks to your funds, one less Black body has a significantly decreased risk of experiencing preventable complications during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum. Your funds will help to increase their chances of having a positive birth outcome and optimal postpartum recovery.
