Gala Hills, MA Painting, Slade School of Fine Art, weaves her research-led imagination into a practice shaped by rural Dartmoor’s myth-laden landscapes. Rooted in stories of stones, storms and shape-shifters, her work drifts between disciplines with the same freedom she was raised in, home educated, always moving, always learning, blending history, geology, folklore and the uncanny into quietly animistic worlds.

Introducing “Black in Diaspora”, a poignant representation of self discovery and empowerment that many young people of African descent embark upon. The artwork depicts a young boy carrying three books on his head, each title reflecting a significant aspect of the Black experience: “Black in the Caribbean”, “Pan Africanism”, and “Black History in the United States of America”.

Through this piece, I aim to highlight the importance of education and knowledge in understanding one’s heritage and identity. The books on the boy’s head symbolize the weight of history and the responsibility that comes with carrying the legacy of one’s ancestors.

In creating this piece, I drew inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of Africa and its diaspora. I hope that “Black in Diaspora” will serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of embracing one’s roots and celebrating the diversity of the Black experience.

Medium: Oil and Charcoal on Canvas
Dimensions: 24” x 30”
Circa: 2024

@artist_aoibhin, an incredible artist born in Belfast and based in London, whose work is all about layers upon layers of colourful escapism. I had the absolute joy of visiting this beautiful studio on a bright, cold Monday morning, and the moment I stepped inside, I was transported. The space was flooded with natural light, bouncing off vibrant canvases that felt like windows into other worlds.

@artist_aoibhin work captures the feeling of escapism, whether through abstract forms, bold colour explorations, or pieces that evoke a sense of place without being literal. Each painting is a happy place, a moment of freedom and reflection that invites you to pause and lose yourself. Now, Aoibhin is delving deeper, constantly evolving, and creating work that speaks to something far beyond what’s on the surface!

Aoibhin's art isn’t just about what you see, it’s about what you feel. Every piece acts as a conduit for emotion, pulling you in with vibrant colours and rich textures that you can practically touch. And what truly stands out is her love for the physicality of paint itself. The thick layers, brushstrokes, and textures all celebrate not just colour and nature, but the joyful process of painting. It’s an exploration of both the world around us and the medium itself.

I had the pleasure of visiting @norasshades studio to experience her powerful new series alongside some of her latest works. It’s been so inspiring to watch her artistic journey unfold, especially after her fascinating residencies that have clearly influenced her practice. ✨

Her new series dives deep into the intersection of beauty standards, surveillance, and femininity in the digital age. Always a privilege to see an artist explore such relevant and complex themes with this level of depth.

The soft pastel hues evoke purity, yet there’s an underlying discomfort in how the figures engage with the viewer eyes locked, almost inviting attention. In her latest works, she focuses on high heels as potent symbols of femininity and societal expectation, distorting them to reflect the manipulative influence of filters on self-image.

@norasshades creates striking sculptural shoes inspired by Versace’s iconic 80s designs. Paired with matching plinths, these pieces amplify the dialogue between societal notions of femininity and the raw, authentic self.

It’s been an honour to witness Nora’s unique voice in the art world, particularly following her recent residencies. Her continued ability to push boundaries and challenge perceptions is truly remarkable. 🌟

I had the pleasure of catching up with the wonderful @phillipreeves_ a few weeks ago, although he was in the midst of moving to a new studio. Most of his work had been packed away, but there were still a few intriguing pieces on display. We chatted about his recent group exhibition at Noho Galleries that took place in November.

Philip’s studio had such a quirky, welcoming vibe, and he kindly treated me to tea and biscuits while we discussed art! 🍪

One of the standout pieces I saw was an unfinished work titled Ibiza Foam Party playful, bold, and a completely fresh direction for him.

We also delved into some deeper creative conversations. Philip shared how he’s been exploring stories and narratives in his work, particularly how clothing acts as a costume for characters, influencing how they’re perceived in different scenarios.

The painting Dance of the Moths (first image) feels, to me, both dreamlike and mythical, with a whimsical element. It captures the hazy, blurred essence of a dream, where certain details come to the fore while others slip into the unconscious, creating an atmosphere that is both familiar and subtly unsettling.

Philip also mentioned that his art is often inspired by quirky and exaggerated stories he comes across, especially when they veer slightly from the truth. Some works even feel like private jokes, for those who are in the know. It’s a fascinating blend of history, imagination, and humour.

I’m already looking forward to revisiting the studio as his work continues to evolve. Keep an eye out for more updates from this creative! 👀 I’ll be back soon, and this time, I’ll bring the biscuits! 😄

I had the privilege of seeing @nailahazell latest artwork, and wow it’s absolutely stunning! Vivid, emotional, and full of energy. 🎨✨

Her studio is equally amazing, with a unique space in the corridors showcasing her pieces like a mini-gallery. And for those looking for a break, there’s a chic coffee shop in the building perfect for relaxing in style. ☕️

Naila shared the inspiration behind her work, explaining how her photography influences her paintings. Each piece is a reflection of her life experiences and surroundings, making every artwork feel like a personal memory or lesson. It’s clear her art is truly authentic and deeply meaningful. 💫

Right now, Naila is exploring themed parties in her latest collection think bold, dramatic, and captivating! The Kiss is one piece you definitely don’t want to miss!

She’s also working on something truly special a new installation piece. Inspired by her heritage, it’s a powerful, positive piece that radiates pure love and energy. Still in progress, but already making waves! See me at the end getting all the good vibes by hugging the ball of love!

Don’t miss out on seeing Naila’s incredible work for yourself check out @daa.artgallery or the artist's page @nailahazell.

This is an artist to look out for and her work would an amazing addition to any art collection, space or home.
