All-American Ruins: A Buzzard in the Ballroom by @allamericanruins (Blake Pfeil and @stev_hull_allen) | A fantastical audio theatre experience, beginning inside Peekskill’s abandoned Colonial Terrace. The experience slowly becomes part guided meditation, part cultural reflection, part sound expedition into the underbelly of America. Well, well, well… look who came crawling back. The fireflies. This is from my spring trip to the Smokies, where I led my Fireflies of the Great Smoky Mountains workshop. Each year, I try to showcase these incredible insects a little differently than I have in the past.

The idea for this image was inspired by the work of @pete_mauney whose firefly photographs often depict the landscape as if were “dripping” with bioluminescence. I wanted to explore that idea in my own way.

I’ll be announcing my 2027 workshop soon. If you haven’t already, hop on my mailing list so you’ll be among the first to hear about it.

In the latest @NatGeo, I write about the photographer Pete Mauney, who has a passion for capturing things in the night sky — initially, the movement of fireflies, and more recently, the ever-present, largely invisible tracings of air traffic. Using “image stacking” techniques borrowed from astrophotography, camping out for hours in the industrial surrounds of big airports like EWR, his still and video images gorgeously depict an unseen process over our heads each night.

High Falls Conservation Vibes✌️✨

Testing out more C50 footage shot at High Falls Conservation in Hudson, NY. This is a great location for families hiking up to the newly constructed lookout point.

For a more intermediate hike, stroll down to the base of the falls. Be sure to wear appropriate hiking shoes because the rocks and trails can be slippery.

Learn the fundamentals of lighting THIS SUNDAY with photographer/videographer @pete_mauney

Pete will be demonstrating how to light product, portrait, moving image, Jamaican beef patties, and really anything you can think of — through the classic 3-point lighting set up. He will explain how it works, why it works, and the basic rules of lighting all things. In Pete’s words “learn the rules so you know how to break them.”

Hope to see you Sunday, 2-5 at Catskill Photo Studio. Sign up link in bio!

🙏to @joannawhicker for being our reel master once again. 💙
