These women are some of the artisans who work with the brilliant @irthicouncil making traditional crafts like talli braiding and safeefah palm frond weaving in the north of the UAE.

Their work is incredibly detailed, and while it may be a traditional craft, it’s far from being stuck in the past. Irthi partners with regional and international designers to create collections that are stylish pieces of functional art. You can read more about their work in my latest article for @hadaramagazine.

Thank you @irthicouncil and your amazing artisans for allowing me to spend time with you 🙏🏻

New cover story with @sultanalqassemi for @hadaramagazine .
.
My favorite part of the shoot was getting a tour in the #sharjahartmuseum by the art collector himself. His passion for Arab art and his wealth of knowledge is admirable. But the thing that struck me the most was his celebratory representation of minorities within the art community. In his words “This is nationalism that is cultural, and not political”. .
.
If you happen to be in New York between Jan 14- April 4th be sure to check out @nyugrey for his “Taking Shape: Abstraction from the Arab world 1950s-1980s” exhibition.
