I drove roughly 2,500 miles to race with my great uncle, @peterlloydjones

The weekend was never really about the results…. It was about what racing can do. It brings people together. It creates projects that take on a life of their own. And sometimes, it gives you the opportunity to do something pretty damn cool.
This race was the culmination of a project that has been over a year in the making. We’ve spent the last year sourcing parts, piecing things together, and turning an Aprilia RS457 into a race bike ready for @n2trackdays 2hour endurance at VIR.
Friday was a bit of a wash. We were repeatedly interrupted by red flags before lightning eventually shut the track down altogether.
Saturday morning, things got a little more interesting. During the free practice, Peter clipped the inside curbing, which sent him tumbling into the grass. I was able to get the bike repaired and back out for qualifying. In Q1, I managed to put down exactly one hot lap. In Q2, I found even more time and qualified the team with a 1:47.470.
I went out for the first stint of the race and was quickly reminded that I am not particularly accustomed to endurance racing in the extremely hot Virginia weather. Eventually, lightning moved back into the area and, once again, 🚩🚩🚩 and then the skies opened up.
We didn’t have a second set of wheels already mounted with rain tires, so we quickly pulled the wheels off the bike and got them over to Stickboy to have the wets mounted. That wheel change ultimately cost us three laps to the race leader and dropped us from 8th to 11th. After another red flag, the race was called, and 11th is where we finished.
This weekend was so much more than a result. It was Peter and I racing on a motorcycle we’d spent months building. It was our little team, sponsors, and partners who helped make the whole thing possible. And it was the friends and family who traveled all the way to Virginia to support us, cheer us on, and help keep everything moving.
I may not have come home with another lap record, but I left with a memory that will last generations and a reminder why i love this sport.

@peterlloydjones joined us in person @americade_rally to talk about racing, his career as a moto journalist, & fear. 🏁 He also has a book out called “Bad Editor” which is a collection of his columns and essays. It’s one of the best books on motorcycling we’ve ever read. You can find it on Amazon. 📚 Link in bio for the FULL YouTube video or find Ep. 56 on any podcast platform under #feroce 🎙️
