The October/November 2026 issue of The Progressive magazine is OUT NOW!

Cover Art by: @petexryan

-------------------------

In this October/November issue, we chronicle the devouring of our democracy in the lead up to a highly fraught midterm election. John Nichols breaks down the failure of corporate media to substantively cover the Wisconsin gubernatorial primary election and insurgent democratic socialist candidacy of Francesca Hong. Emily Markwiese reports on how the labor union National Nurses United works to prevent the termination and deportation of its members. Melinda Tuhus documents how one Connecticut child care provider is tackling the affordability crisis by offering its employees free housing. Brea Baker reports on the health impacts of hundreds of data centers concentrated near the nation’s capital. For our “On the Line” photo essay, Cristina Panagi captures the goings on inside 26 Federal Plaza, a Manhattan immigration court notorious for immigrant intimidation and detention. We share an excerpt from Mahmoud Khalil’s new book, No Land To Stand On: Notes From Detention. Our publisher Norman Stockwell speaks with New York Times bestselling author and political strategist Ben Wikler, former chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, about his prescription for resuscitating U.S. democracy.

Congratulations to @petexryan for winning a CASE award for illustrations for Hofstra University: The Text Files. One of only 5 winners in the illustration category this year!

"One of the most conceptually daring entries. Judges praised the crime-scene typography concept and dynamic composition. Some of the comments were “ingenious,” “arresting,” and “brilliant execution.”

What if justice was not only about punishment but about meaningful accountability, healing, and healthy relationships?

Statistics Canada shows a rise in violent crime, while confidence in the legal system is low. Much of the public debate around crime centres on arguments about ‘get tough’ via incarceration and stricter conditions, but research-based evidence points to an alternative, effective pathway: restorative justice. It better serves both victims and offenders.

This powerful article from @_broadview_media shares vital information and touching stories of restorative justice in action across Canada.

One survivor, after a facilitated restorative process, told the judge the person who seriously assaulted him should not serve a jail sentence because he had already made things right. The article reveals how victims seek answers, acknowledgement, repair, and humanity, things the legal system rarely provides.

Restorative justice has been implemented in more than 80 countries around the world. The programs look different but they tend to have similar outcomes: offenders are less likely to reoffend and victims often feel satisfied with how things are resolved.

We are delighted to see Vancouver becoming a Restorative City mentioned:
“in 2022 committed to becoming North America’s first restorative justice city. Since then, 40 organizations have collaborated on a restorative justice framework that extends beyond the criminal justice system into policing, courts, schools and parks and recreation facilities. That framework was presented to Vancouver City Council in November 2025, but recent budget cuts may affect how and whether it gets implemented.”

Canadians are paying over $6 million every day to hold people awaiting their court appearance. These costs can be lowered by investing in restorative justice which would also reduce recidivism.

It would be a win-win for all!

Patagonia: you’re crazy.
Had a great (and challenging) time hiking with good buds and making new ones along the way. Once in a lifetime kind of trip.

Like most people, I’ve recently been looking back over the year of work and collaborations. The brilliant @petexryan just created the Canadian snowboarder illustration for client @rbc Inspired Investor online magazine, for their Year in Review feature. Followed by Portfolio Playlist and The Lipstick Index. Pete is the type of artist who always delivers multiple smart ideas and a final piece that makes you smile and think. Thanks Pete!

Let Chicago serve as an example, wherever you are. We will not back down, regardless of Trump’s threats. We are here, on every street corner, checking license plates, handing out training materials, looking out for each other as best we can. We wear whistles—and so can you.
