🪅 When folks play the game of Lotería they have their favorite ‘tablas’ - gameboards. I often choose one that has a PERA (pear) on it. Maybe it’s because my momma loved to eat this “fruit of the gods” or maybe I’m attracted to their curvy shape, but today I went down the rabbit hole and found out that pears are linked to femininity, fertility, immortality, abundance, prosperity, comfort, health, and even wisdom. Now I’m really digging pears ! 🍐      Here is this year’s reinterpretation of Lotería card 15 LA PERA (The Pear). Thank you Canadian artist @charlotte_sigurdson_art for making this pear-bottom girl (and two small works) for our show.   Our annual Lotería show in which artists reinterpret the art from the classic Don Clemente Gallo Lotería deck is online now. 116 original pieces. Link in bio. Loteria XII https://cactusgalleryla.com/collections/loteria-2026 Check out the collage here of other versions of LA PERA from previous shows. All so wonderful! Thank you artists, friends and collectors your love and support of our 12th annual Lotería show! 🌵❤️🌵 #cactusgalleryla #charlottesigurdson #loteria2026 #lapera #mexicanbingo

Oh, how we LOVE the minis! Small works are an affordable way to purchase original art - and they don’t have to be the star of a wall in your casa - they can sit on a bookshelf, hang in that hallway that needs an oomph! and they make wonderful gifts, especially to those just starting their collections. If you love the captivating magic of wee works, you are in for a treat because our upcoming Lotería show will include 54 tiny gems. Some quirky, some naughty and some extremely silly works are included in this year’s treasure trove of goodness. Gracias @patriciakrebsart for designing this second evite which has interpretations from the secondary deck, numbered 55-108, the deck that inspired all these small works. Show info/pre-sale info in our bio (upcoming shows). #cactusgalleryla #loteria2026 #mexicanbingo

🎉 Hola amig@s. Not a lot of posting lately ‘cause La Lotería group show is approaching and like I say every single year, it’s a big one, but with love and care, it’s always supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! This will be the 12th consecutive year for La Lotería exhibit. For anyone not familiar with its pronunciation, it’s LOH-TEH-REE-AH. It’s a Spanish word that translates to “lottery” or “raffle.” More info on the show origins in the bio (upcoming exhibits) and tons of info online on this ‘game for the people’ that goes back as far as 1887. Thank you artists for fabulously reinterpreting the art on the classic Don Clemente Gallo Lotería deck. In the old days we would play this “Mexican Bingo” game at the gallery to lively crowds. We have very fond memories of these days. La Lotería show is always fun; filled with quirky, sometimes political, sometimes serious, and often extremely silly works - and this year is no different. Thank you viewers, friends and collectors for encouraging this show to continue. Viva el arte!! Gracias @patriciakrebsart for designing this evite which has interpretations from the original deck, numbered 1-54. The original deck we used this year is the second image - see if you can figure out which images were represented on the evite.

In addition to featuring event listings, DCA’s Latino American Heritage Month Calendar and Cultural Guide contains artist profiles, poetry, and other resources that are valuable year-round. Please enjoy a selection of artwork and interview excerpts with the artists who were spotlighted in our 2025 publication. COVER ARTIST: Francisco Letelier My art practice is inspired by the richness, diversity and knowledge held in the broad Latino cultures of LA and across the Americas. In work that recognizes travelers and the exchange of ideas, I affirm our lives in all their complexities, celebrations and challenges. Marinés Adrianza Working with textiles connects me to ancestral traditions, where handwork, patience, and storytelling preserve cultural memory. Through fabric I celebrate my heritage while also creating space for reflection and healing. Alfredo de Batuc The fountainhead of my imagery is still a mystery. Art itself continues being an enigma to me. Since I can remember I've always been drawn to rendered images irrespective of the source. Brenda Gomez I tell stories with elements I never leave behind—like the sun, braids, human connection through hands and eyes, animals of power, party, vibrant colors, and warm details that emerge from my cultural heritage. Angela Ortiz My brother and I arrived in Los Angeles from Panamá when I was ten years old. We had to build a life that was different, sometimes impulsive combinations of cultures, and the emotions, colors, and images of growing up in LA in the turbulent, often exciting time informs my work. It always will. Alberto Senior Creating brings back memories that keep me connected to my roots and the spirit of where I come from. Each piece is an offering to my community, giving voice to our strengths and struggles as immigrants seeking a better life. Federico Tresierras Through my art, I connect to my heritage by using colors, symbols, and emotions that remind me of traditions and stories shared within my family. My community is also part of my work, because each piece is created with the hope of inspiring others to see ability, strength, and creativity in new ways. online.flipbuilder.com/culturela/izdh

For the month of August, @cactusgallery is participating in the Micro-Gallery Project in the Wrigley area of Long Beach, CA. It’s a super cool way to see art and build community. In the comments you’ll find a link to an article about how @daverclarkdesigns idea for the micro-galleries turned his neighborhood into a mini-art district. Our pals @gallery5lb had Dave build Gallery 5 and Gallery 6 for her and invited us to fill them with wee art from our current Loteria show. Join us this Saturday, August 2 from 6-9p at: 2300 and 2301 Eucalyptus Ave, Long Beach CA 90806 to view our art and that of 8 other mini galleries in walking distance. The works will be up from August 1-31. Viewable from sun up to sundown and I believe Lisa’s galleries have solar panels so they can be viewed at night too! Gracias @patriciakrebsart for designing the fab evites for this annual show. #cactusgalleryla #art #gallery5lb #loteriaxi2025 #mexicanbingo #loteriamexicana

-Ojalá por Eduardo Galeano (in English in the comments) EL MUNDO was created by artist @milka.lolo for our 11th annual ¡La Lotería! show. It is this year’s representation of La Lotería card THE WORLD. 🔴 Congrats Milka and thank you RH for your continued support of the arts! Saw some of the LOTERIA XI work on Friday @cactusgallery. In the ‘mini’ section (secondary Loteria card deck) there were some of the tiniest tinies I’ve ever seen shown in this big annual show. Here are a few. Will try to tag each artist. (Edit: oops, only meant to tag, not message.) The show opens July 18. For presale info: sandra@cactusgalleryla.com. #loteriaxi2025
