Michigan State Reformatory

In 1877, hundreds of incarcerated people from Jackson State Prison were brought here to Ionia by train to be the first inmates at "State House of Corrections", until it was renamed in 1901.
The institution would stand for 149 years until its speedy demolition in 2026. Michigan Cited rising costs and low populations in the prison for the reason of closure.
In 1926 an unknown number of prisoners rioted, they targeted administrator strong points, strategically overpowered the guards and ultimately 26 prisoners managed to escape.
In 1982 there was 500 man riot, which culminated in buildings burning, guards injured, vandalism, and looting.
It would close for 6 years after 2001, before reopening in 2007.
For most of its existence it would hold kids aged below 20 here. This would become the breeding ground for much of Michigan's most dangerous individuals.
Since the opening of the nearby prisons, this one quickly became obsolete.
After waiting for the right time to make the visit to Ionia, I got word that demolition has sneakily began without any announcement whatsoever.
So, I quickly hopped in my car and drove the necessary 16 or so hours to get out there. After meeting up with my friends from the internet, we started walking the trail up to the prison. After jumping between overgrowth to go uphill, once we reached the prison, I realized I had dropped my phone somewhere. After quickly searching snd giving up, I decided to explore without my phone and enjoy the sunlight that we had left.
When the sun began to go down, my phone lit up on the ground thanks to incessant phone calls, and we managed to make it a happy ending.

I am so blessed to get to call myself a friend to this man & to have the opportunity to watch him change and grow. The sky has come falling down on this dude more times than I can count, but he gets back up every time with a smile on his face in spite of it all. He inspires virtue in every person he meets, never backs down from a challenge, has a passion for his craft that goes beyond obsession, and would do absolutely anything for his friends without question. What a wonderful soul man! There never was such a strange, adventurous little freak! Wishing a happy birthday to you dawg, cake and candles and whatnot og😤

(August, 2023) Walking through a psychiatric facility once acclaimed for having some of the worst living conditions possible. Patients sat in cold brick rooms, with zero clothing as it made laundry work less cumbersome on the staff. They’d freeze in the cold winters with no bathrooms available. Instead they’d be given steel buckets, being forced to clean it out whenever orderlies came around. Which quite often wasn’t for multiple days on end. Sitting in a cold room naked with no human contact, sleeping next to your own shit for days on end is enough to drive a person crazy. Match that with an extremely unfit diagnosis, and abusive orderlies the place became a living hell. Full of patients acting out, starving themselves, and even exiting life on their own terms. All of this can be seen in a terrifying exposé, made in the form of a black and white documentary film called “Titticut Follies” which is nearly impossible to find. But if you search hard enough it can be found on the internet archives website.

Massive inner city morgue that was used to collect unidentified bodies as well as the cities homeless. Fly zappers adorn the ceilings and walls due to the advanced state of decay most of the bodies arrived in.

Underground neon diner. When I first stumbled into this spot in 2023 it instantly became a favorite hangout spot of me and my friends. Was pretty sad to see how some in the community blew it up and posted massive sets as soon as the location was leaked. (You know who you are) Internet validation and attention seeking really destroys this hobby. The power has since been cut to this location and all entrances sealed. Btw I shot this place like ass because I barely knew what I what I was doing with a camera when I shot it.
