Woolgathering with Jessica Grindstaff. We love looking back at stories told with some of our favourite clients, collaborators, and communities. We’re sharing these here as a series called Woolgathering. Today we’re revisiting an interview with @jessicagrindstaff of @phantomlimbcompany, published through our @inwildair project. In Wild Air was a weekly newsletter that invited guests to share six things they love. Jessica shared her love of writer Karl Ove Knausgaard, Peter Zumthor’s architecture, poetry, soaps, and ceramics, but it was her dream cocktail party guest list that we keep returning to: “Erik Sanko and I have been having a conversation for 20 years about what it would be like if such and such (insert deceased luminary here) were to meet such and such and what would they talk about. We decided to make a short film that is a cocktail party where all of these people are invited and finally meeting. They are of course all marionettes on an intricate lush set. Their conversations are collaged from pre-existing recorded dialogue of their actual voices. The big surprise is when the camera pans up revealing the puppeteers, I won’t spoil it. These are the people: Harry Houdini, Louise Bourgeois, Groucho Marx, Alfred Hitchcock, Hellen Keller, Frida Khalo, Vladimir Nabokov, Ernest Shackleton, Georgia O’Keefe, Diane Arbus, Jean Michel Basquiat, Bill Baird, Joseph Beuys, TS Eliot, Derek Wolcott, Claude CahoonJohn BergerSalvador DaliPina BauschDavid Bowie, Paul Klee, Egon Schiele, James Baldwin, John Lennon, Maya Angelou, Zora Neale Hurston, Captain Beefheart, Oliver Sacks, Joseph Campbell, Billie Holiday, Virginia Wolf, William S Burroughs, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Pablo Neruda, Italo Calvino, Maurice Sendak, Edward Gorey, Mapplethorpe, Charles And Rae Eames, Shostakovich, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Nina Simone, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Samuel Becket”

Sophie Hunter directed Phantom Limb’s 69 ̊S. at BAM’s Next Wave festival, New York in 2011. Inspired by Sir Ernest Shackleton’s 1914 Trans-Antarctic Expedition, it was a co-creation of Phantom Limb Company and The Kronos Quartet. The show melded theatrical performance, puppetry, photography, dance and film with original music to create an artistic and emotional journey. The aim was to bring the unknown Antarctica and the subtext of climate change to an audience while reinvigorating the spirit of foregoing individual glory for the sake of collective survival. 69 ̊S. united some of the finest contemporary musical, visual, and performance artists in the world in collaboration to explore the inherently bittersweet and complex nature of the Shackleton experience. Congratulations to Jude Pullin, a MICA Internship Fellowship recipient who will be interning with Phantom Limb Company in New York, NY this summer! “I found out about Phantom Limb when they spoke as guest artists last semester. I was so enamored by their work I knew I had to learn from them. I am someone who likes to work across multiple disciplines. I am a GFA Major and am Double minoring in Animation and Illustration, plus the MAT program. I work in illustration, sculpture, animation, fabrication, electronics, sound and storytelling. My plans post graduation will include some sort of production environment which demands multidisciplinarity. I also have ambitions of becoming a professor after establishing my professional practice. I am interested in theater, animation, publishing and several other fields for which I am amassing as many skills as possible. And when I eventually teach, I believe I will be able to cover a broad range of artistic opportunities and experiences. The Phantom Limb Company is a puppet theater group on Broadway. Their practice demands the practical application of skills from all disciplines, including painting, sculpture, sound, electronics, writing, performance, and the ability to manage and direct all of these aspects toward a finished product. This sort of environment will give me first hand experience with not only all of my creative interests and mediums, but also the fast paced and involved nature of such a line of work.” - Jude Pullin, ’27 GFA, MAT
