I don’t really have a voice today because all of you took my breath away with how gosh darn inspiring you are. Thank you for sharing your spirit and determination with all of us. @kathrineswitzer once said if you’re ever losing faith in humanity, go out and watch a marathon. Strangers cheering for strangers. People running while raising money for causes near and dear to their hearts. And a whole city that welcomes the world to achieve one goal. Damn. Ain’t no better event. Which is why it keeps drawing me back in after already coming out of retirement once. Sydney and yesterday ignited that flame again…

Thanks to my spectating runventure partner in crime @phil_d_run for almost 10 miles of running, walking, and jello-ing. Same day next year? 🍻

A lil pause in prom celebrations for a VIP announcement: Happy 1000th Day in a row of running at least one mile to my dude @phil_d_run! We don’t do anything halfway around here at the @skokieswifters , and that includes celebrating all of the things. I admire the heck outta you friend, and know that so many others feel the same way. You have shown us what commitment, dedication, and showing up truly looks like. Thank you for sharing your what might be considered “nonsense” with everyone - it makes sense to us 🖤1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣💛

Five years ago I thought it’d be fun for Skokie to have a run/walk club of its own.

Five years ago I thought it’d be great if, maybe, 5-10 people showed up every week and we ran and walked together and had some drinks after.

Five years ago I had zero expectations for what the @skokieswifters are today.

As the founder of what has become one of Skokie’s most recognizable community names, I am immensely proud of what we have done together, and humbled by the support and love that this community continues to receive. I may have had the idea and the audacity to make it happen, but you all gave it LIFE.

Five years ago my life changed significantly, and I would not change anything about it. Happy Swifters’ Day, everyone. Thank you for showing me how to truly believe in yourself 🖤5️⃣💛

Four months, 351 miles ran; less than three weeks, about 100 miles to go. Holy. Cats.

There are a myriad of silly Sabs faces in this post bc there have been a huge myriad of feelings about running these last few week. Regret. Joy. Anxiety. Envy. Ennui. Anger. Sadness. Among a few many others. And while we’re not talking about a certain Pixar movie, we are talking about the completely normal emotional experience of training for a marathon. Yes we chose to do this. Yes we signed up for it. Yes we are happy to be here. And yes, we can have regret.

Not that I regret any of this experience, but I think it’s challenging, this close to the race, to NOT say things like “I wish I had done this or that…” With this being #peakweek and with #tapertime quickly approaching, it’s hard to not look back at the past four months and wonder “what if I had…” But that’ll drive you crazy and now is when you really have to start trusting your training. And while there are several things I do wish I had done better or more of, the only test to still pass is crossing both the start and finish lines on August 30 - and let’s be real: that’s less of a test and more of a CELEBRATION of the journey that is a marathon.

And certainly something I do NOT regret is getting to share this with all of you. I write these reflections as a journal for myself and in the hopes that at least one of you takes one thing I’ve said and can connect it to your own experience. Bc sometimes we need to hear that just one other person is also feeling the myriad of feelings that we are. Thank you, as always, for reading, for supporting, and for sharing miles with me. Thanks to my lucky stars for all of you 💫

YOU INSPIRE ME 💫

To all my friends, pictured and not, that ran today’s @chidistanceseries 13.1, thank you for showing what determination looks like. If I’m not running in a race myself, I wanna be cheering a race, and today was THE BEST cheering day. The conditions were NOT ideal for running: it was hot, humid, sunny, and sweaty, but y’all didn’t let that stop you from conquering a half marathon. What persistence and dedication you demonstrated, along with so much JOY I saw from so many of you. Shout out to the best cheering partner @autumn.does.chicago, and special appearance by @sweeet_n_lo; I loved getting to see you both!

Runners, I hope you are proud of you - I sure as heck am ✨

And now for me, Week 8 awaits: 8️⃣3️⃣ days ➡️🇦🇺

One month, 69 miles down; three months, umpteen miles to go…

That’s a wrap on month one of @sydney_marathon training! And I’m here to tell you to be your own hype person. I am SO PROUD of how I handled these first four weeks. Coming off of a back injury, ankle injury, and the flu, it was not the time to jump right into heavy miles and intense workouts. I committed to slow, easy runs, all with run/walk ratios of 5:1, and trying to readjust nutrition and sleep. Every so often the “am I doing enough?” thoughts would creep in, but I stayed the course and my patience paid off. And let’s not forget the end of the school year is W I L D and has all of its own stressors to complicate things. And yet today was my longest run since January and fastest overall pace, even with the run/walk ratios. Progress! Go me! 💪

But I’m also here to tell you to lean into your community and not be afraid to ask for help. To anyone that shared miles with me or an encouraging note or a silly photo to make me smile, thank you. I’m so much more confident about this training cycle with you in my corner, and I’m grateful that you take time to share your support with me. 💜

Month two and week five on deck. Now we build more strength and some longer midweek miles. LFG n KFR 🙌

April, you brought showers and the flu and getting back on my running feet and two new tattoos (which makes an even 10, which is how many marathons I’ve currently run so I GUESS I’ll have to get one more after August, or before, I run my 11th marathon to keep my number of marathons and tattoos even which sounds like a totally reasonable thing to do?), and loads and loads of smiles and laughs and time with my people that I am so effing grateful for. We have 16 days of school left and I wouldn’t have made it here without all of you. Thank you for continuing to give me reasons why 🥰🤍😘

While @ravenswoodrun doesn’t award medals at their race, the medal for me on this #medalmonday is the reminder that I have heart and I have guts and I have dedication. This was a hard race physically, and I’m still recovering from the last few months, but it’s clear my mind is stronger because I enjoyed all that the race morning had to offer. It’s a lovely jaunt through one of Chicago’s neighborhoods, and the crowds are supportive, and the volunteers are the best. That race time is a far cry from my all-time 5k PR of 24:58, but I am learning how to be in a different era of running right now. Running is not linear and if we can’t accept that, then maybe we start to love it a little less. And I certainly don’t want that so I’m learning to accept where I am and get back to basics so I can be comfortable physically again. Special thanks to @hebert.jake for being my race buddy - we hit paces we shouldn’t have but it reminded me of the fun that exists along the way. Thank you friend. KFR 💛🖤

March, you came in like a lion and are kinda going out like a lion but I do appreciate that you allowed me to have much more of the balance that I’m striving for this school year. There was a lot of joy, and a lot of tears, and I’m leaving this month grateful as always to all of YOU who stay in my corner no matter what. Whether it’s 5 minutes or 5 days, I appreciate all the time you give me. Would you believe it if I told you there’s 34 school days left in this school year? Holy. Cats. But first BRB, gonna go thoroughly enjoy spring break 😴
