Yesterday was the reception for the @philadelphiasketch clubs 1st digital art show. Even though the weather was poop, there were still a ton of amazing artists that were able to show up. Still surprised at my win and super grateful! Thank you Oscar for pushing me to make these pieces and submit to this show! My Mom and Will for taking me and always being there. And my partner and friends for always supporting what I do! And a big thank you to both artists @smshd_label and @kianflo because the work wouldn’t have won without them. Can’t wait for what’s next, thank you!

Urban sketch class with @mundieart

Fun to paint indoors for a change. Kate encouraged me to simplify when I was overwhelmed by all the architectural details and the people (so many people! All moving!)

Nice time at The Philadelphia Sketch Club’s 162nd Small Oils Exhibition today in Philly. My oil painting, “Seashell Motel,” placed 2nd in the show, and “Pink Cadillac Diner” was also exhibited. Happy to show in Philly and connect with some new artists. Thank you juror Matt DeProspero - regarding “Seashell Motel,” “I just loved the overall feel of this painting, with so much going on in a small space and many different sources of light. I can feel the thickness of the air and the descending nighttime of an overcast day. The severe cropping and slant of the scene piqued my interest and made me want to spend more time looking.”

7758. “I love this community. It brings together everything that I enjoy.”
-
Growing up in Lower Merion, Alex Torch (aka Torch) struggled to connect with the people around them. But they always naturally connected with art!
-
With their parents, who worked in corporate roles, Torch used to visit museums and galleries like the @philamuseumart. However, after their freshman year at Lower Merion their family moved to California.
-
There, Torch finished out high school and then stayed on the west coast to study Psychology and General Science at @uoregon. They figured through their classes they’d better understand people, but they actually gained more from unexpected experiences.
-
Firstly, through Covid, Torch stopped living for the validation of others and stepped into their trans nonbinary identity. And secondly, through their cadaver anatomy lab, they reignited their love of drawing by learning about medical sketching.
-
Torch then interned as a medical sketcher at @childrensphila, worked at @traderjoes while taking classes at @fleisherart and ultimately landed at @philadelphiasketch - first as a volunteer and now as the executive director of the club!
-
And through their role, they’ve been able to tie together their passions for logistics, community, being around art and supporting artists - all while guiding the future of America’s oldest art club! Awesome hanging with you, @torchhasfun!
•
How we met: Torch and I were introduced through @phillyhasheart (#7550) at @piigallery!

Show your work alongside fellow Philadelphia Sketch Club members in this juried competition.

Members in good standing have the chance to submit up to ten pieces, knowing that a juror will select a maximum of two for exhibition. This is your opportunity to see your work displayed in the PSC Gallery and available for sale to a community of art enthusiasts and collectors. Any 2D or 3D medium works, from paintings and drawings to sculpture and mixed media, are welcome as long as they meet the size and weight requirements. Your pieces should be original creations not previously exhibited at PSC, professionally presented and ready to hang, and priced to reflect any shipping costs since PSC takes a twenty-five percent commission on sales. This Members Exhibition celebrates the breadth of talent within our community and invites you to be part of a tradition of artistic excellence.
