Milestones in Motion for Harbor Day School 2026.
We are so grateful for this sweet school and the impact it made on Ward’s life. I can’t believe this is our TENTH year running this race. The first year I ran was just days after I received Ward’s diagnosis when I was pregnant with him. I’ll never forget crossing the finish line fighting back tears and being met by staff members that were already celebrating the life Ward would live before he was ever born.

Cory impressed me so much - just 2 months into this running thing, and he’s come so far! I also got a personal best today. Here’s to many more races together!

Cory already said it more beautifully than I could have, but our Fall Break in Hot Springs was such a gift for us. Our vacation was supposed to be somewhere else, doing something else, but one thing I’m learning recently is that our God has a way of turning things upside down or inside out, and just when we think it’s all going to crumble, the end result is something new, fresh and beautiful.

I’m thankful for disturbed plans, but more importantly I’m thankful that God doesn’t leave our hearts undisturbed.

So here’s a few more pictures of our adventures in Hot Springs - a treehouse at the most beautiful gardens, holding and feeding alligators and parakeets, roller coasters, the Hot Springs Mountain tower, bathhouse tours, and the newest Jr. Park Rangers. ❤️

This guy. Most of you know that running isn’t his favorite thing, but he suggested that we do this race together. I’m amazed by the way he loves me and supports me. And by the way, he’s a pretty good runner even without any training!

Thanks @explorer_acres for a fun race on a fantastic course!

Our last day here was a travel day back to Ljubljana from Rovinj, but we took some time to go down to Pula (Croatia) to see the Pula Arena. This Roman amphitheater was constructed between 27 BC and 68 AD during the reigns of Emperors Augustus and Vespasian. This amphitheater is the only Roman amphitheater in the world to retain its entire circular structure. It was spectacular. We toured some of the underground tunnels and learned about the olive oil production in Pula as well. The amphitheater is still used for events, and was set up for a large film festival today when we visited. In recent years, concerts from names like Elton John and Hillsong United have been hosted here.
Enjoy an assortment of local pastry and food pictures from the travel day as well 🤣. Cockta is the famous soda here, and the round pastry I am holding is called a burek - they are stuffed with cheese, cheese and spinach, or cheese and meat. Cory and I ended our day checking into the cutest little Bed and Breakfast on the outskirts of Ljubljana, eating a traditional Slovenian meal, walking around town and finishing with some iced coffee by the river. Our sweet hotel was so worried that we would be missing breakfast in the morning so they loaded us up with croissants and bananas. 🥰

To finish our day yesterday, Cory and I enjoyed a sunset cruise touring the islands near Rovinj and the coastline of the Austrian peninsula. We got to learn about the Limski Fjord and sail into it a bit. We enjoyed a stop at Pirate Cove, a cave where local pirates would ride out storms. Now there is a Pirate Bar there serving drinks and snacks to visitors. After a swim in the fjord, we were served a traditional Croatian barbecue dinner consisting of sardines, chicken and bread. We saw dolphins while the sun set on the Adriatic Sea and enjoyed some accordion tunes from Captain Duie.

Yesterday we started our day slow in Rovinj by grabbing some coffee and taking a swim at the beach. The beach is made up of small stones and rocky water. The water is beautiful and clear. After swimming, we took a walk up to the Church of St. Euphemia. We learned that she was martyred in 304 AD. Her sarcophagus moved from Calcedonia to Constantinople where it stayed until 800. Then, the iconoclasts came to power and people feared her remains may be dishonored, so the sarcophagus disappeared from Constantinople and reached the shore of Rovinj on July 13, 800. It has been safeguarded in Rovinj ever since. The people of Rovinj consider her their protectress. We climbed the old bell tower of the church. It was a bit sketchy climbing the very old, small wooden stairs, but the view was incredible.

We got to our next destination this afternoon - Rovinj, Croatia. This beautiful peninsula was originally part of the Roman Empire but has a huge Venetian influence from centuries of Venetian rule. It was originally an island but the channel between the island and mainland was filled in in 1763. The colorful buildings are fitted between small cobblestone streets and alleyways. The whole peninsula and adjacent city center is a completely pedestrian area, and the town seems to come to life as the sun sets. Every street was filled with people shopping, eating, enjoying gelato and listening to street music long after my bedtime.

We took one last hike in Slovenia before we left Bled - we hiked up to a viewpoint to watch the sun rise over Lake Bled, and it was well worth the early morning and steep hike. We left Bled and headed to see the amazing Postojna Cave. The tour took us on a train 2 kilometers into the cave, then we got out and walked through another 1.5 kilometers through the cave then back out on the train through different caverns. It was truly spectacular. The cave also houses the only post office in a cave in the world, where you can still send postcards. We also saw the Predjama Castle - the largest cave castle in the world. Learning the history about this cave was fascinating. If you look closely, you can see holes in the cave that serve as windows in the castle. We continued our road trip southwest and stopped for a quick meal and walk in Trieste, Italy. Trieste’s Piazza Unita d’Italia is the largest sea-facing city square in Europe. Trieste is also the coffee capital of Italy, since 90% of coffee imports come through Trieste’s port.

The Vintgar Gorge was a big highlight of the day and I can see why it is a top Slovenian attraction. The pictures can’t quite capture the full beauty of the mile we walked along the gorge. The end of the gorge culminated in a huge waterfall and single-arch stone bridge. After walking through the gorge, we had to hike about 2.5 miles more to get back to our starting point since the walkway along the gorge is one-way, but we made some friends along our hike…and that is a story for another day. (I’m sure it’ll make its way into a sermon in the future 😃). After another day of lots of hiking and walking, we finished the day with a great meal by Lake Bled.

We began today with the Straza Bled toboggan, a mountain coaster with beautiful views of Lake Bled. Then we headed toward Lake Bohinj, with a stop at Savica Slap (Slap means waterfall in Slovenian!). We hiked up 553 steps to see this gorgeous waterfall! It was SO tall. Then we explored Lake Bohinj by swimming (just a little because even in the summer, the glacier water is cold!), paddle boarding, and walking around seeing the church that dates back to the 10th century and the beautiful stone bridge. We had a quick lunch with some Slovenian sandwiches and peach tea. We headed to the Grnecica Slap, only to find that it was just a drizzle, but Cory jumped in the frigid water anyway!
