Rizal 3000 imagines a future where loyalty to a politician trumps patriotism, and where people allow what they are fed to dictate their thoughts instead of doing their own research and exercising independent judgment.

Written and directed by Vince Tañada, who also plays Josephus, a character depicting Rizal in the year 3000, the production brings Rizal’s legacy into a future that feels increasingly familiar. Rizal’s writings once awakened a nation and helped inspire the fight for independence. His words challenged the status quo and encouraged Filipinos to think beyond what they had been led to believe.

I never really knew that there had been changes in the school curriculum concerning the study of Rizal. That alone made the play’s message hit differently. If Rizal’s writings once helped awaken a nation, what happens when future generations are no longer given the same opportunity to understand his life, ideas, and sacrifices?
(Please , listen closely to Vince Tañada’s short message at the end of the play that I captured.)

The play is set in the year 3000, but watching it, I couldn’t help thinking how much of that future already feels like our present. With the way things are going, 2026 is starting to look and feel a little too much like 3000.

A note to myself and hopefully for anyone reading this: Keep Rizal in my mind and heart. Question what I am told. Do my own research. Think for myself. Remember that patriotism means more than loyalty to any one person; it means caring enough about our country to seek the truth and exercise independent judgment.

May we never forget the Rizal who dared to make a nation think—and may we never lose the courage to think for ourselves.

Thanks @attyarj for the invite!

Rizal 3000’ Imagines a Future Where the Philippines Has Forgotten Its History

@philstagersofficial brought its latest theatrical production, Rizal 3000, to St. Scholastica’s College Manila last weekend, offering audiences a bold reimagining of Philippine national hero José Rizal through a fusion of science fiction, history, romance, comedy, and music.

Set in the distant year 3000, the musical envisions a technologically advanced Philippines ruled by authoritarian President Don Forti Zaragoza and First Lady Rosinie Zaragoza. In a society where history has been outlawed and Rizal’s legacy erased through artificial intelligence, neural implants, and state-controlled information, historian Josephus Raval and his son Franchesco embark on a journey to uncover the truth about the national hero. Their search leads them to forbidden historical accounts, revisiting Rizal’s life, romances, advocacy, the founding of La Liga Filipina, and his eventual martyrdom.

Written and directed by Vince Tañada, with music by Pipo Cifra, the production features a cast led by Tañada, Johnrey Rivas, Joseph Bautista, OJ Arci, and Vean Olmedo, alongside other performers.

Beyond its futuristic premise, Rizal 3000 underscores the importance of remembering the past, defending freedom, and preserving national identity.

The musical is set to tour nationwide, with further details available through Philstagers Foundation’s official channels.

🎭🇵🇭 What happens when a nation forgets its heroes?

RIZAL 3000, written and directed by Vincent M. Tañada, offers a powerful and thought-provoking look at the legacy of our national hero, Dr. José Rizal, through a futuristic story that reminds us why history matters.

One of my biggest takeaways from this play is that forgetting our history means risking the loss of our identity as Filipinos. Rizal’s ideas about freedom, education, truth, and love for our country remain relevant even as the world changes. It also reminds us to think critically, question what we are told, and never take our freedom for granted.

More than just a theatrical performance, RIZAL 3000 is a reminder that patriotism is not only about remembering our heroes but also about living by the values they fought for. 🇵🇭✨

Because the future of our nation depends on how well we remember and learn from our past.

PhilStagers Foundation’s “Rizal 3000” received enthusiastic applause after its successful staging at St. Scholastica College in Manila on Sunday, October 11.

In his speech, award-winning writer-director-actor and foundation founder Atty. Vincent M. Tañada emphasized that the production supports their call for DepEd and CHED to reinstate Philippine history in the basic education curriculum.

Set in the year 3000, the musical envisions a dystopian Philippines where remembering Rizal is an act of rebellion, highlighting the enduring power of history and ordinary people to shape a nation’s fate. “Rizal 3000” will tour theaters across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao starting November.

A dream that once lived in my heart is now taking shape under the lights. 🎭✨

Here’s to chasing the dream, even when it gets hard. To showing up, giving everything you have, and trusting that every small step is bringing you closer.

This is only the beginning. The dream is worth the work. ❤️‍🔥🎭
