POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I'll be speaking online this evening at 6:30pm about photographs by Paul Strand, Rineke Dijkstra, Paul Graham, William Christenberry, and Joel Sternfeld, as well as five of my own photographs. Thank you to photographer Matthew Baum, founder of the online education and community platform @photo.phlo, for the invitation to join this great group of photographers.

Excited to be a part of Photo Phlo’s newest endeavor the 5+5 Slideshow beginning next Tuesday 10/3. So many talented photographs will share 5 images made by other photographers and how they helped inform each of our bodies of work. It’s been a great challenge to distill the Lams work down to 5 photographs while connecting them to the greater world of photo history so it’s time to use that MFA brain again. Please join me and my 5+5 talk on Tuesday 10/13…more links and info to come. Hope to see some familiar faces there. PhotoPhlo link in Bio.

I find photo sequencing to be lyrical like poetry or a special section of prose. There’s always a connective thread between the images. Sometimes it may stretch very thin, but it should still be there, if only as a feeling.

I must have worked through a dozen different iterations of How Should I Move through this World. Groupings by type, sequencing that conveyed movement and travel, lyrical styles.
This story of traveling through life is poetic. It’s fragmented and often obscure. Awesome and frightening.

I’m sure it differs from project to project, but, in general, what guides you sequencing?

Do you ever feel a little reptilian when you finally find a patch of warmth? 🦎☀️

When I was a kid, I remember reading about a lizard that would 'bask in the sun', soaking up every bit of warmth it could find. It was the first time I heard that word....basking....

Sometimes I pass a view that makes me understand exactly why.

There’s something almost physical about that last bit of sunlight before evening takes over, the warmth on your skin, the way the light spills across the landscape, and that instinctive feeling of wanting to simply stand there and absorb it.

I don’t often manage to photograph a feeling as much as a place, but this one comes close.

The empty field.

The single tree standing in the distance.

The last rays catching the tops of the tall grass.

The sky glowing while the edges of the landscape begin slipping into shadow.

For a few minutes, everything seemed to be basking.

So I did too.

Very pleased that this photo was selected for the Visual Currents exhibition in Little Rock, AR at the South Central SPE conference in October.

Sometimes the destination isn't the view from the top, it's what you discover after you arrive.

After hiking Rattlesnake Ledge in Washington, I expected the panoramic overlook to be the highlight. Instead, I found myself completely captivated by Rattlesnake Lake below.

The water was so incredibly clear that every stone on the lakebed seemed close enough to touch. As sunlight danced across the rippling surface, it painted soft, silky ribbons of light over the rocks below. The constantly shifting reflections felt almost abstract, like a fleeting work of art that existed for only a moment before changing again.

Moments like this remind me that every landscape has more than one story to tell. The mountains may first capture our attention, but it was the movement of light beneath the water that stayed with me long after I left. Sometimes the most memorable part of a place isn't its grandeur, but the way it quietly invites us to see it differently.

Have you ever visited a place where the unexpected became your favorite memory?

Some places become part of you.

For more than a decade I've found myself returning to the back roads of Weybridge, Vermont and the surrounding areas. The destination has never really mattered as much as the journey. Season after season, these familiar roads quietly tell a different story.

The fields change color. The clouds never repeat themselves. Barns weather, roofs are repaired, windows are replaced, and time leaves its mark on every board and beam. It's a reminder that even the places we think of as permanent are constantly evolving.

I often wonder how many generations have stood where I stood, watching these same fields, these same skies, noticing the same slow passage of time.

This photograph is less about a barn than it is about memory, resilience, and the beauty found in ordinary places that continue to endure.

Still working on this project. Shot on Portra 160 with my Pentax 645 nii.

Though I still connect it to Husserl’s Phenomenology, I’m thinking it’s a kind of mythology that I see. I’m calling it the Fable of Industry.

Read more about the project on my Substack. Link in bio.

Feel free to share or ask me questions about my work. I do selective commissions.

First of all, a huge thank you to everyone who came forward and helped me find people to meet, photograph and document through my series, Stories That Matter. I am so glad to be resuming what feels like a lifelong, endless collection of stories, with no other agenda than to preserve the humanity and goodness that quietly exists all around us.

As far back as I can remember, photographing people who have touched my day or expanded my way of seeing has always been a quiet thought behind my work—a bonus of life, if you will. These are the people who remind me that there is always a world beyond my own.

So when I found myself back at the very place where I had once met a woman on a selfless mission to care for more than 30 street dogs, I knew I had to photograph her again.

And there she was.

Much older, a little more frail, but with the very same zest, warmth and unconditional love for every one of her dogs. She still loves being surrounded by them in her humble abode, where her life continues to revolve around their care.

What started with just thirty dogs has grown into over 250 plus dogs now, all of whom she calls as her children. Today, people from all around the neighbourhood willingly come forward to support her and her mission. It is heartening to see how one person’s compassion has inspired so many others.

Her life is beautifully simple. A small temple at the back of her home is where she rests, prays and finds peace, always in the company of her dogs. Every day, with the donations left behind by kind passers-by, she prepares fresh homemade broth and chicken to feed them all.

My appreciation for people like her only grows, and I can only hope that through these stories, I continue learning to become a better human being myself.

Please feel free to Dm me if you want to help her with her mission.
