Guests arrive without knowing exactly what to expect, so a guesthouse needs to feel welcoming from the very first step. At this guesthouse, that welcome starts outside with a garden setting, a reflecting pool, and curved forms that make arrival feel calm, inviting, and just a little unexpected.

We studied how the oaks frame the site and how the sandstone catches light through the day. The copper rooflines, rounded forms, and native stone walls all came from paying attention to what was already there.

There's a lot on the menu in this renovated 1950s California ranch home. We worked with the owners to open up the kitchen, dining, and living areas while preserving the home they love. White cabinets, a bold teal backsplash, a dining table with a starburst chandelier overhead, colorful art, and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass all come together under one vaulted ceiling, with high windows bringing daylight in from above.

A great entry should feel like an invitation. At this Montecito home, stone steps lead through a lush yard where the trees filter the light and the low roofline sits quietly behind the canopy. It is the kind of approach that slows you down and lets you take it all in before you reach the door.

We spend a lot of time thinking about how people arrive at a home, because the entry is the handshake of the design. From a bright pop of color to a quiet stone path, every arrival sets its own tone.

The material palette takes its cues from the site. Sandstone, board-formed concrete, cedar, and copper echo the colors and textures of the hillside, changing naturally as the house ages. Overhead, the curved cedar ceiling brings warmth and softness against the weight of the concrete and stone.

A kitchen built for a lifetime is more than a place to cook. It’s an open space shaped around the art, travel, and indoor-outdoor living our clients love, because creating a true sense of place starts with listening to what they value most.

First day of fall calls for a fire like this one. Sandstone brings the warmth of the surrounding hillside indoors, while the glass wall keeps the Carpinteria sunset in full view.

We designed this Santa Barbara Beach Residence folly with quite the travel story, hand-fabricated from solid teak by artisans in Bali, shipped to California, and permanently assembled at the end of the lap pool. Step out of the water, wander into the shade, and it becomes a quiet place to stretch, read, meditate, or get a massage.

A painting of trees pulls you down the hallway and an oak-leaf chandelier frames the canopy over dinner. This home was designed to live with the ancient oaks and sycamores on its lot in every room, not just through the windows.

Some homes feel most alive at night, when the fire's going, the oak canopy settles overhead, and everything gets a little quieter. This family's ranch was designed to be a real place of retreat, and nights like this are exactly why.
