Effective leadership means staying connected to the people and experiences shaping our mission.

In higher education, some of the most valuable perspectives come from simply being in the rooms where learning happens. Listening. Asking questions. Understanding how our decisions translate into the experiences of our students.

Spending time in @phsupr's Dental SIM Lab recently, I saw how our students are developing their skills through the care we put into our facilities, technology, and faculty that support their learning.

Moments like these shape how we approach education at PHSU. When we bring together the right resources, faculty expertise, and learning environments, we prepare future healthcare professionals to do more than excel clinically. We prepare them to lead and serve with passion in their communities.

Hace un año me paré por primera vez frente al podio de SPOT, todavía como estudiante de medicina. Este año volví, ya como MD, y con el orgullo de representar al Departamento de Cirugía Ortopédica de Ponce Health Sciences University (@phsupr @ponceresearch). 🦴🇵🇷

Presenté nuestro trabajo “Diagnostic Bias, Confidence Miscalibration, and Test-Retest Reliability of Three General-Purpose Multimodal Large Language Models for Wrist Radiograph Interpretation”, que salió publicado hace poco en el Journal of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine.

La pregunta era sencilla: ¿se puede confiar en la inteligencia artificial que ya todos tenemos en el bolsillo para leer una radiografía? Pusimos a prueba a Claude Opus 4.6, GPT-4o y Gemini 2.5 Pro con 237 estudios de muñeca del set de validación MURA. Además de ver si acertaban, quisimos saber si su confianza tenía que ver con sus aciertos, y si al mostrarles la misma imagen dos veces contestaban lo mismo.

La respuesta fue que no. Cada modelo se equivocó a su manera, su nivel de confianza poco tenía que ver con si estaba en lo correcto, y en ocasiones la misma radiografía recibía un veredicto distinto la segunda vez. Son herramientas prometedoras, pero todavía no están listas para tomar decisiones por nosotros.

Compartir esto con la comunidad ortopédica de mi isla tuvo un significado especial.

🥼 Leading the Way: First AMEDD Accession of FY27!

Big milestones deserve a massive shoutout! 🎉🩺

Please join us in celebrating 2LT Francisco Reyes, who has officially made history as our very first AMEDD (Army Medical Department) accession for FY27!

Formerly a Platoon Leader with the 162nd Quartermaster Company, 2LT Reyes is taking a giant leap forward in his military and medical career. Currently a second-year medical student at Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU), he has been reappointed as a Medical Student (00E) under the highly competitive Medical & Dental Student Stipend Program (MDSSP).

He is bringing his passion for medicine and leadership to the Joint Force Headquarters-Puerto Rico (JFHQ-PR) State Surgeon Office, where he will work alongside our state’s top military medical professionals and fellow students.

From leading Soldiers in the field to preparing to care for them as a military physician—this is what leadership looks like.

Thank you for your continued service and dedication to both medicine and our nation, 2LT Reyes!
