Unfortunately ‘Bit, between teeth’ has been cancelled by the Trustees at Stepney Bank Stables due to concerns about the content of the exhibition. Phyllis, Sandy and I are incredibly disappointed, not least because of the hard work we’d already committed to the show. We are working to find an alternative venue. Stay tuned.

EDIT: this exhibition been postponed while we seek a new venue ***** Bit, between teeth An exhibition of photography, painting and performance by Jesse Howarth, Phyllis Christopher and Sandy Kiralawella. Bringing together three artists whose work reflects on queer desire, power and equestrian aesthetics, ‘Bit, between teeth’ looks to the horse and its associated gestures, objects and imagery as a way of thinking about queer bodies: how they are disciplined, desired, displayed, handled and set loose. 🎊 Exhibition opening: Friday 9 October 6-8pm 🗓 Exhibition dates: 10–11 + 16–18 October 12–5pm 📍 Stepney Bank Stables, Top Yard, NE1 2NP 💌 Open by appointment during the week: email Jesserosehowarth@gmail.com Poster: Rosalind Duguid Image credit: 1 The NewBridge Archive Project, Phyllis Christopher 2 Phyllis Christopher 3 Sandy Kiralawella @jsshwrth @phyllischristopher @resand.who @rosalindduguid @stepneybankstables18

"[...]the exhibition is a vital public resource of the herstory of the feminist & queer movements on these isles and across the world, it's a source of inspiration, hope & radical energy, it's something that presents a challenge to us all individually & collectively on our own activism & what that looks like in the context of intersectionality, and perhaps most importantly it provides us all with the opportunity to experience unapologetic moments of queer joy & sisterhood. With everything going on in the world right now, but particularly here in Belfast where we have seen racist pogroms on our streets in recent weeks, a rise in hate towards our trans siblings and as one of the most violent places in Europe to be a woman, the importance of being able to show this exhibition here has never been greater. Art is power, and it's through exhibitions and programmes like this where art really does have the power to achieve radical transformation. We are no stranger to activism here in Belfast, but there are times like now where we need to be reminded of its power, the possibility to make change & to have hope that it can be better- art like this shows us that & shows how critical a tool art is in that fight. Few other galleries have the experience within their team or the capacity to deliver an exhibition of this scale and with such a clear voice - challenging, imagining, inspiring, and ensuring that the stories of those most needed but often missing from traditional art spheres are told in such a beautiful & impactful way." — @groogana Councillor Áine Groogan in response to Outside the Circle X Belfast @goldenthread_gallery ____________________ Exhibition Details 1. While Cooper Gallery's exhibition is currently on tour in Belfast @goldenthread_gallery we're looking back to photos of the massive showing of artworks and archives by queer and feminist artists and collectives here at DJCAD in 2024. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ In Dundee the exhibition made a splash with the press gaining 4 stars in The Scotsman and reviewed as one of the 'Best Exhibitions of 2024'. "Through an exceptional collection of archives, drawings, ephemera, manifestos, paintings, performance, photographs, sculptures, video works and writings by world leading artists, writers and activists, the exhibition celebrates the distinctive nature of creative and curatorial practices and collective action as critical interventions that can influence and realise necessary social, cultural and pedagogical transformations - and acts as a prompt for current and future generations to be inspired by these agents of positive change. The touring exhibition provides the opportunity to celebrate the distinctive experimental nature of the art school and university gallery and is an exciting collaboration between two Plus Tate venues - both recognised by Tate for their excellence. We are excited to see the impact of this work, originated here in Dundee, resonating with audiences in Belfast." — Professor @anitataylor_ Associate Vice Principal Research & Innovation Arts & Social Sciences, University of Dundee 📸 The Ignorant Art School: Sit-in #4 | Outside the Circle, 2024–2025 @sallyjubbphotography 1. The NewBridge Archive Project is a long-term project with photographers Phyllis Christopher and David Hall; documenting the community that forms in, and around, The NewBridge Project – studio artists, art workers, groups and community initiatives. 🌳 Over one-year we’re aiming to take the photo of every studio member who is up for it! Be part of a collective portrait of the many people who make up NewBridge! We want to tell the story of our studios, the rich, messy, experimental spaces behind-the-scenes. We want to spotlight your practices in the spaces where they begin to take shape. 📸 For studio members and groups this is chance to have your photos taken by two amazing photographers. You’ll get digital copies of the photograph(s), which you can use for your own work or websites. Visit our website for more information and how to get involved—link in bio! 🔗 Image credit: @nostalgia_kid and @phyllischristopher
