5 years ago, we opened Planterday for business! 🥳

Launching at the beginning of the pandemic meant endless pivots—from a humble Google Doc order form to trailer pop-up events, eventually finding our second home: a tiny plant shop on College Ave.

Along the way, we’ve partnered with Crisis Support Services of Alameda County, collaborated with amazing local businesses, hosted countless events, and even traveled across oceans for new business opportunities. What started as a way to share plants has grown into something so much more—a way to build community and connection, and you’ve been the heart of it all.

As long as we’re able, Planterday will always be your neighborhood plant shop—because every day is Planterday!🌿

🪴 How did you first discover Seed & Soul?
The first friend I made in my apartment building was through a shared love of plants - that same neighbor invited me to my first Seed & Soul swap. I remember being worried that my plants weren't special enough to offer, but the event was so welcoming that everyone's contributions felt valued. I had a wonderful time and started to prefer swapping plants over buying new ones.

🪴 A little story about your first swapped plant, how it's doing now, or a fun memory:
I can't remember the exact plants from my first event, but one of my favorites is a syngonium albo cutting from a Filoli swap. I was still quite new to the world of uncommon plants then. Any plants with 'albo' variegation felt too precious and expensive for me to buy, so winning a cutting of the syngonium albo was really exciting! I've chopped this plant back multiple times and given away so many cuttings since, but I will always keep some for myself to cherish.

🪴 What keeps you coming back to our swaps and events?
I keep coming back for the warm, welcoming atmosphere and the generosity of the community. Everyone is excited about plants, often sharing cuttings or giving away their winnings to others. It’s always fun, and I leave with new plants and great memories!

I also love the swapping ethos and the sense of connection. Sharing plants and knowing their origins feels special, and somehow, everyone leaves with more than they brought!

You have the power to bring a community plant biology lab to life! 👇🏾

December’s plant swap at @kinfolxoak was a bit of an experiment to see if a community plant biology lab resonated with, well, the community. Since then, it’s become clear that the answer is a resounding yes. 😍 Cannabis growers, houseplant collectors, amateur breeders, and plant conservationists have expressed interest in exploring plant biology at a deeper level.

Of course I’ll continue to work my a** off to bring this to life, but I need your help. Please spread the word far and wide! An increase in community awareness and support is crucial to keep the ball rolling. Here’s a few quick ways to help:

if you know me you know I HATE being sappy and I HATE being long-winded even more but this week has marked my 6 years calling San Francisco home and i’m feeling hella emotional about it. I’m not going to say anything more or go on and on about how being here has changed my life so tremendously much but cheers to 6 whole years and to the friends I have made here i love u MUCH thank u for rocking with me 🫶🏼✨ keep it cool
