24 years ago today, @xtina absolutely blessed us with the release of her album titled Stripped (2002) 🖤⚡️ Looking to transition from the teen pop styles of her self-titled debut album (1999), Aguilera took creative control over Stripped, both musically and lyrically. She also changed her public image and established her alter ego Xtina. Musically, the record incorporates pop and R&B with influences from many different genres, including soul, rock, hip hop, and Latin music. Lyrically, most of the album’s songs discuss the theme of self-respect, while a few other songs talk about love, sex and feminism. As an executive producer, Aguilera enlisted numerous new collaborators for the album. Commercially, Stripped debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, with first-week sales of 330,000 copies. It was certified five times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipping over five million copies in the United States. It is Aguilera’s best-performing album in the United Kingdom, becoming the 29th and 40th bestselling album of the decade and millennium there, respectively, with two million copies sold. Despite its initial critical reception, Stripped and its singles received five Grammy Award nominations, including one win, and has since gone on to receive critical praise. The album has sold over 12 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of the 21st century.

On this day, 21 AND 18 years ago, Paramore released their single’s titled “Emergency” and “Decode” (2005) & (2008) 🎸🚨🪾☁️ Emergency is about the fact that love is taken for granted, and how most relationships are in emergency status. It is also about Williams’ witnessing her parents’ argument and failing marriage as a child. During an interview with the February 2008 edition of Alternative Press, Williams said, “I remember actually walking out the door with my mom that night and standing in between my parents and screaming “Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!” It failed to chart in the United States, however, it was released in Kerrang!s “Class of ‘06” compilation CD, calling it one of the best rock tracks of that year. Hayley Williams explained how the Decode’s title and lyrics were inspired by the complicated relationship between the book’s protagonists: “I chose the title “Decode” because the song is about the building tension, awkwardness, anger and confusion between Bella and Edward. Bella’s mind is the only one which Edward can’t read and I feel like that’s a big part of the first book and one of the obstacles for them to overcome. It’s one added tension that makes the story even better.” “Decode” was promoted to American modern rock radio by Fueled by Ramen and impacted on October 21, 2008, serving as the Twilight soundtrack’s lead single. It is also included as a bonus track on the international version of Paramore’s third studio album, Brand New Eyes (2009).

23 years ago today, Amy Winehouse’s debut album was released, Frank (2003) 💐🖤💗👠 In a 2004 interview with The Observer, Winehouse expressed dissatisfaction with the album, stating: “Some things on this album make me go to a little place that’s fucking bitter. I’ve never heard the album from start to finish. I don’t have it in my house. Well, the marketing was fucked, the promotion was terrible. Everything was a shambles. It’s frustrating, because you work with so many idiots—but they’re nice idiots. So you can’t be like, “You’re an idiot.” They know that they’re idiots.” Upon its release, Frank received generally positive reviews from most music critics and earned Winehouse several accolades, including an Ivor Novello Award. The album has sold over one million copies in the United Kingdom and has been certified quadruple platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

On this day, 21 years ago, @ashleesimpsonross released her second studio album titled I Am Me (2005) 🖤🎸🎤 I Am Me was released about fifteen months after Autobiography, which was released in July 2004. According to Simpson, following her concert tour from February to April 2005, she was supposed to take a month off, but began working on the album early; as she said, “I got home and got bored, so I called John Shanks and was like, ‘Can I come in the studio? Let’s get a head start so the record company’s not asking for the record right away or anything.” She also said that she wanted to “get the pre-jitters or anything that was going wrong out of my system. And when I went in everything started going smooth. It was fun.” According to Simpson, she felt less pressure when recording I Am Me than she did when recording Autobiography. I Am Me debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, as did its predecessor, Autobiography; however, I Am Me did not achieve the same level of success as Autobiography. Whereas Simpson’s first album sold 398,000 copies its first week of release in the U.S., I Am Me sold only about 220,000, according to Billboard; sales for the album declined 67% in its second week, when it sold about 73,000 copies and fell to number six on the Billboard 200.

on this day, 20 years ago, JoJo released her second studio album titled The High Road (2006) 𝜗ৎ Its recording sessions took place between late 2005 and mid-2006 in California, New York City, Miami, and Atlanta, following her completion of filming Aquamarine and RV. While recording the album, JoJo worked with producers Scott Storch, Sean Garrett, Swizz Beatz, Josh Alexander, Billy Steinberg, Vincent Herbert, J.R. Rotem, Beau Dozier, Ryan Leslie, and among others. Releasing it on October 17, 2006, through Da Family Entertainment, Blackground, and Universal Records, JoJo co-wrote two out of the seventeen tracks from the album. The High Road was preceded by the lead single “Too Little Too Late” which became JoJo’s best-performing single on the US Billboard Hot 100. It broke the record for the biggest jump into the top three on the chart, moving from number 66 to number three in one week. The song also reached the top ten in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and the UK. The second single, “How to Touch a Girl”, was released on November 14, 2006. It failed to impact charts in the US. “Anything” was released as the album’s third and final single on March 20, 2007, reaching number 18 in Ireland and number 21 in the UK.
