@pieintheskypress’s letterpress prints are remarkably photorealistic.

A lifelong lover of photography and a self-taught naturalist, Rebecca discovered letterpress in art school and began a long search for a way to combine her interests.

Eventually learning a new method from Dan Mayer at a 2009 book arts conference, she then spent years experimenting and refining that process into the four-color photorealistic letterpress technique she uses today.

Rebecca has lately used her photorealist letterpress process to share the world of birds, observed over time through her camera and “sit spot” routine.

She is a book artist, printer, writer, and bookbinder whose handmade artist’s books celebrate the beauty and complexity of the natural world.

Rebeccca led the Book Arts program at Otis College of Art and Design for 30 years before retiring in 2023 and continues to teach workshops at book arts centers across the country.

This summer, she returns to Penland’s wonderful letterpress studio to teach this exciting process.

CODEX 2026
— celebrating all the awesomeness!!!!

WOW. WOW. WOW.
Seeing so much talent at every table was genuinely breathtaking. Each artist—or collective—brought a deep well of commitment, curiosity, and care. Behind every project on view were years of honing craft, nurturing ideas, moving through comp after comp, sometimes scrapping an approach entirely and starting again.

There were journeys taken to learn from experts, to try new techniques, to refine and rethink processes—often quietly, patiently, and with incredible focus. All of that devotion led to the birth and realization of what may have started as the smallest crumb of an idea, now fully alive and ready to be shared.

And then comes the brave part—putting the work out into the world. Standing behind their tables, artists leaned in as attendees approached, conversations unfolding through questions of how and why, and through the generous exchanges that only happen face to face. Longtime friends reappeared after years apart, hugging and celebrating one another and the work they brought with them.

It brought to mind Theodore Roosevelt’s Man in the Arena—that quiet courage of daring greatly. The ones who show up. Who pour themselves into a worthy cause. Who knows deep enthusiasm and devotion. And those who experience the triumph of high achievement not because it was easy, but because they were willing to step forward and be seen.

I missed many incredible projects during my short visit, but wow—damn—you all are seriously talented. 💯

On view now in the NEW @ SC&A exhibit case: a selection of artist’s book from a major recent gift from poet and founder of the Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here project, Beau Beausoleil. The Al-Mutanabbi Street project started in response to a 2007 car-bombing in the heart of Baghdad’s book district: Al-Mutanabbi Street. The project called for book artists and printers to respond to the event, reflecting on the strength and fragility of books and the endurance of ideas in the face of violence. Come on up to the 3rd floor of H-L Library to learn more!

1-4: Amaranth Borsuk’s Sunt Laceimae Rerum
5: Christina Mitrentse’s Wounded Book Series I
6: Ginger Burrell’s Breathe for Those Who Cannot
7-8: Art Hazelwood’s Al-Mutanabbi Street, March 5,2007

Some work from the flatfiles.
Love having new stuff on the walls.
I have so much gratitude for an ever growing collection of original artwork from artists that I admire (and some that are even friends).
Finally getting so many favorites up feels good.
Added a few new Alien pieces to the Alien wall in my hallway.
Framed up 2 small silver prints from Bill Schwab that I’ve had for nearly 20yrs and finally framed. Still miss you Bill.

#glamclam #glamclamquilt look at those clams! My glam clam turned out soooooo beautiful! I used the fabrics I printed with Rebecca @pieintheskypress for the @lamqg fabric printing workshop. And I pieced the clams with the guild and the fabulous Latifah @latifahsaafirstudios during her glam clam workshop. Quilted during the #lamqgretreat2025 this beauty is being donated for the guilds holiday quilt giveaway.

Most of the fabrics I used were donated by LAMQG member Rachel @sewcaligal who passed away last year, her husband donated her stash to the guild with the request that we use it to make charity quilts 💗 this one is for you, Rachel

Artist-led Exhibition Tour: Saturday, November 22, at 11:00 AM. Free with gallery admission. See link in bio to RSVP

About the Artist
Rebecca Chamlee is a book artist, printer, writer, and bookbinder who has published thoughtfully designed, letterpress-printed, limited-edition fine press, and artist’s books under the imprint of Pie In The Sky Press since 1986.

Her work is in prominent special and private collections throughout the U.S. and has been exhibited widely.

About the Exhibition
The California Effect—New Books from the California Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers is rich in both artists and bookworks. 29 artists are exhibiting 54 books, boxes, and broadsides. Some are in limited editions, and others are one-of-a-kind. All are handmade individually with handmade and fine papers, cloth, thread, glue, inks, and paint. What exactly is the California effect? More precisely, what is the effect on the many of us who live, work, and visit here? The misty mornings and baking hot afternoons? The endless coastline, chill forests, or dry desert arroyos? Each of us has an answer, seen in the books we make, in our tastes and inspirations. We turn to making books: printing them, binding them, reinventing them, turning them into art—making books as art.

The California Chapter is one of ten chapters, revealing the national reach and scope of the Guild and its dedication to promoting interest and awareness in the tradition of book and paper arts. The members include hand bookbinders, design binders, conservators, calligraphers, makers of artist books, fine press printers, and papermakers. A fully illustrated catalogue with information about each artwork and biographical information about each artist is available to order.

The California Effect exhibition and related programming are graciously supported by The Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation, the Pasadena Art Alliance, and the Bess J. Hodges Foundation
