WHAT IS ALREADY THERE?

A few moments from FAST 2026 in Oradea. I had the chance to share some of the projects I’ve been working on and talk about a question that keeps coming back in my work: how do we work with what is already there?

It was great to be part of FAST and to meet and listen to architects whose work I’ve followed and admired for a long time.

Thank you FAST for the invitation!

Grazie!❤️

⭐️We need ‘street architects’—architects capable of being among the people, of transforming the places where they live or work into a site open to people’s lives and to the history of their homes and the buildings they inhabit, in order to rediscover and add value to them.
⭐️Søren @pihlmann is one such architect, and last night on the @seed360official stage, he shared his extraordinary experience. Thank you!❤️

Handmade floor tiles introduce weight into the otherwise timber-based construction. They anchor the rooms to the ground and allow direct movement between inside and outside without requiring a fragile threshold.

The project does not introduce new material to the site. Instead, it works through dismantling, sorting, and reconfiguration.

Pihlmann & Kim Lenschow
House on Fano
…
With the Wadden Sea coastline in the front, landscapes of heather and pine in the back and the Port of Esbjerg in the horizon lies House on Fanø. It follows a local time-honored tradition for solid longhouses as the island’s notoriously harsh wind has called for buildings based on robustness and simplicity.
Traditionally, barn and habitation were placed under one continuous roof, due to Fanø’s rough weather. The houses were built by sailors and farmers in robust, local materials, and they were oriented from east to west to protect from the west wind. Today, you still see the characteristic longhouses all over the island. House on Fanø interprets basic elements from the traditional longhouse and rewrites it within a contemporary construction practice focusing on the local identity, a simple structure and materials characterized by sensory qualities.

Exploring the national pavilions of the Giardini at La Biennale 2025, where architecture acts as a platform for cultural exchange, experimentation, and global discourse.

I am particularly drawn to the Danish Pavilion, featuring the work of architect Søren Pihlmann of Pihlmann Architects. Build of Site approaches the restoration of the pavilion as the exhibition itself, diverting resources from a temporary installation toward the building’s long-term renewal. Through an interdisciplinary approach, materials discarded during the renovation are reimagined into new structural elements, challenging conventional perceptions of waste and material value.

As global construction continues to place increasing demands on finite resources, we must continue to encourage a more critical consideration of resource consumption and the lifecycle of materials.
