(The ICE activity happened at Menlo Elementary, but I filmed the reel at a different school that I happened to be near the following morning — apologies for any confusion this might have caused!)

Yesterday was the first time I’ve ever shown up for an ICE watch in my community and I wanted to share what that was like.

The part that surprised me the most was that it was really nice.

It was a beautiful fall day. People were kind and thoughtful and engaged — I had really wonderful conversations with total strangers (and met an old friend and a follower!).

If you’re in Portland, follow @pirc_oregon (PIRC). They run free ICE watch training regularly — my husband and I did the last one on Zoom, and it was quick, practical, and really helpful. Once trained, you’ll be added to the text alert system so you can show up if ICE is sighted in your area.

The PIRC training (Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition) covers what to do if you have to confront ICE. But there’s also so much power in just showing up. Standing there so families aren’t alone.

So, we know ICE was there. And maybe they would have left on their own but I feel that when they saw all these regular humans standing in community with those kids and their families, they may have changed their plans. I really think our presence mattered.

Sometimes half the battle is simply showing up.

If you’re not in Portland, look for similar groups where you live. These systems exist — or they can be started. The resources at migrawhistle.org can be used anywhere.

You don’t have to do much to make a difference. Sometimes you just have to show up.

I think one of my Portland Porch Pickup customers left me packets from @migrawhistle with whistles and instructions — thank you! I shared the whistles and information with folks yesterday, they were much appreciated!

Repost Slides 1-5 • @rickiruizor We’ve received credible information that ICE has already displaced the U.S. Coast Guard Air Rescue team in Newport — clearing the way for what appears to be a new regional detention facility that could hold up to 500 people.

Local and state officials are raising alarms after learning that the Coast Guard rescue helicopter, which had operated in Newport for nearly 40 years, was recently relocated.
That helicopter has been responsible for countless life-saving missions — from rescuing fishermen caught in violent storms to responding to plane crashes and maritime emergencies off the Oregon Coast.

The Newport Fishermen’s Wives have long been the heart and voice of Oregon’s fishing community — a group of resilient spouses, parents, and advocates who have stood for the safety of our coastal workers and families for generations.

Their message is one we must all take seriously. Losing the Coast Guard rescue helicopter — especially as Dungeness crab season begins — would endanger lives and undermine the very safety network that keeps our coastal communities strong.

This is especially troubling as Oregon enters one of its most important economic seasons: our Dungeness crab fishery. There’s a reason this is our official state crustacean. The fishery brings huge economic benefit to Oregon, and we must protect those who brave rough coastal weather to deliver them to our tables and our economy.

David and I have been deeply disturbed by rising tensions, and many things we have been seeing and hearing from you, our community.

Since the creation of Syndicate, we have worked to create a safe place for all, where you can leave your worries at the door. Now more than ever, we are doubling down on this.

Not only is there a plank on our sponsorship wall from my mother that reads, “Did you use your kind words today?”, there is also a dedication piece in our dining room honoring David’s parents. His grandparents started an English school in Shanghai, China in the 1920’s, where his father was born. The family crest is the Chinese character, “An”, which means "tranquility", especially appropriate in this current social climate.

Tonight, we will be joined by a special guest, Mona Das. Mona is an award-winning documentarian, past Senator for the State of Washington, and fierce advocate for immigrant and women’s voices. She walks the talk every single day. Mona’s story and platform is not only timely, but inspirational as many voices are being silenced.

For the most part we don’t take photos in the club anymore. We’re living in the moment plus I don’t stop to take a break between my sets, you’ll usually find me on the dance floor when @theincrediblekid is playing 🖤

I receive a ridiculous amount of love in the club, especially when we’re playing our home turf @goodfootlounge where we’ve had a monthly residency for our Desi Latin Soundclash since 2003.

At other venues I’m still mansplained by soundtechs.
At other people’s shows I’m asked how I got into Desi music. I tell you because the bullshit is never ending but the respect & admiration is always more 💖💖💖

The other thing I’m trying to say is TROPITAAL! was a blast. Thank you thank you for the decades of support. This Thursday we play an all vinyl set @heylovepdx,
