This #WorldRestartAHeartDay, we’re reflecting on how far emergency cardiac care has come and the incredible people who helped make it possible.

Just this week, we had the honor of unveiling a new outdoor SaveStation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, dedicated to the legacy of Freedom House Ambulance, whose groundbreaking work helped transform pre-hospital emergency care.

Today, we’re proud to help carry that mission forward by bringing lifesaving AEDs out into our communities, where people live, work, and play. With heated, ventilated, illuminated, and monitored outdoor SaveStations, AEDs can be protected and publicly accessible 24/7, 365 days a year, giving everyday people the opportunity to act before emergency services arrive.

We’re grateful to everyone who continues to advance the mission of expanding access, awareness and education.

The Freedom House Impact !

So yesterday in @cityofpittsburgh was a day I had envisioned for a very very long time, which was to honor @johnmoon4249 and Freedom House,

It took alot of planning and we spent months preparing for this historical day in history to recognize an incredible organization that revolutionized what we know is the Ambulance service.

I have made it my mission to learn about the people, organizations, and initiatives dedicated to saving lives when sudden cardiac arrest strikes. My goal is to try to bring everyone in this space together as ONE, with ONE voice, to improve survival rates and give more people a second chance at life.

I invited John to speak at my annual CPR and AED Awareness event in Washington, D.C., because I wanted every heart advocates to hear and understand where so much of this journey began.

When John shared the Freedom House story with our group, our heart advocates were absolutely blown away. Many had never heard of Freedom House or understood its extraordinary contribution to emergency medical care.

That day, they learned something important. And I believe it is a story that deserves to be told throughout America and around the world.

They demonstrated that with the right training, dedication, compassion, and opportunity, people could accomplish extraordinary things and save lives.

Freedom House was about more than ambulances. It was about opportunity, dignity, courage, and the determination to save another human being.

I don’t believe we can fully measure the impact Freedom House has had—not just in Pittsburgh, not just in Pennsylvania, but on emergency medical services throughout the United States and across the world.

I call it simply THE FREEDOM HOUSE IMPACT !

Today, we honor the pioneers who helped bring emergency medical care to the people. And we carry their legacy forward by making life-saving resources more accessible to the people who need them.

What a beautiful day to celebrate the first Save Station @savestation.ca placed in Pittsburgh! For those of you that don't know, a Save Station is an outdoor climate controlled AED box that is accessible to the public. That means we all have 24/7 access to the AED in case of a cardiac arrest nearby!!

Located at Frankie Pace Park, the Save Station and Zoll AED @zollmedical were donated to honor the legacy of Pittsburgh's Freedom House Ambulance Service. You can see it's exact location on the @pulsepointapp NEARS app or stop by and see it in person!

During SCA Awareness Month, we’re helping more people recognize cardiac arrest, call 911, start CPR, and use an AED.

Because when someone’s heart stops, you don’t have to be a healthcare professional to help save a life.

You just have to BE READY to step in. ⚡️

ICECAP challenges a simple assumption in post–cardiac arrest care: longer cooling may not mean better neurologic recovery.

In this randomized trial, extending therapeutic hypothermia at 33°C did not improve neurologic outcomes, mortality, or cognition.

The key is not to overread the headline. This study does not prove that hypothermia is useless—it asks a narrower question about duration.

And as always: don’t change your practice because of a Reel. Read the paper yourself, review the methods and limitations, compare it with the broader evidence, and build your own clinical judgment before modifying practice.

Before there were paramedics in America, there was Freedom House.

In the 1960s, a group of Black pioneers in Pittsburgh helped build the foundation of modern EMS.
Their story deserves recognition.

A bill in Congress would award the Freedom House Ambulance Service the Congressional Gold Medal — and you can help make that happen.

If someone collapsed in front of you, would you know what to do? In our study out yesterday we looked at out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and Hands-Only CPR on scripted TV.

A positive: Hands-Only CPR was shown more often on TV than real life (58% vs 48%). This could inspire people to act!

A not-so-positive: Only 30% of depictions followed the correct steps with many showing outdated practices such as checking for a pulse or performing breaths. TV also misrepresented where OHCA often occurs (in real life 80% happen at home) and showed younger, whiter, and more male characters.

This research highlights an opportunity for public health and the entertainment industry to work together to save lives! Link in stories to the article and a piece I wrote for @theconversationdotcom about the research!

Proud mentor moment! I am beyond thrilled to share @orefawole’s first, first author manuscript! Ore began working with me in March 2023 as a freshman @pittofficial, quickly showing a remarkable aptitude for research and superb leadership and organizational skills. Her dual degrees in natural sciences and film give her a unique insight into this type of research. She will be starting at @pittmedicine in the Fall, and I’m so excited to see all that she will do!
