Speaking of consent

We use the term a lot but how many of us know what that means? How do we explain it to teens in ways that go beyond “no means no?” What do we even know about the new sexual landscapes for teens and young adults?

These are the books that have helped me. I had my son read “Consent” when he entered high school. That and “Boys & Sex” helped me broaden my understanding of consent to include agency, pleasure, and healthy sexuality. It was an eye-opener to learn how many boys’ first sexual encounter is nonconsensual (i.e., they are victims) and deeply that impacts them.

First half of summer photo dump! I’m really enjoying this book!!! I’m also reading Vanishing Fleece by Clara Parkes which digs more into the wool industry in the US. I want to continue my little education on yarn so I can be more cognizant of where my $$ are going. Let me know if you have any resources or recommendations (books, YT vids, anything)!

Bday day trip to QC Spa with my mom. Really want to go back and have a whole knitting retreat there, maybe sometime in the winter.

Every season of my private Knitatude Knitwork, we have 2 book clubs. One fiction and one non-fiction. Drumroll please: 
Fiction: Birding With Benefits by @sarahtdubbswrites One of my favourite modern day romance books on the market, this one came into a tie in our vote, but the tiebreaker? The author, Sarah herself will be COMING INTO THE KNITWORK AS A SPECIAL GUEST TO CHAT WITH US! She has also offered signed book plates for anyone who wants one for their book!  Bonus: Sarah’s storyline got picked up by Hallmark, and they released it (Adventures in Love and Birding) last fall. So get ready, cause we are all gonna click “play” at the same time and watch it together!
 Non Fiction: Unraveling: What I learnt about life while sheering sheep, dying wool and making the world ugliest sweater” by Peggy Orstein.
This books is such a cool look into all the proccesses that our yarn takes. I was blown away by the physciality of shearing sheep and learnt SO much. I can’t wait for you to read it!

Waiting for Daisy by Peggy Orenstein was one of those books that came to me exactly when I needed it!🌼

This vulnerable, heartfelt, honest memoir captures the years long journey Peggy and her husband navigated to become parents. Going into the book, I knew that IVF was involved, but I didn't realize that Peggy endured so many losses and those were heavily spoken about as well. I sometimes get nervous to read about others experiences surrounding pregnancy loss because it stirs up my own grief and trauma, but I felt so seen as I read these pages and felt an instant connection to Peggy. I've always heard (and now say) that pregnancy loss (and infertility) are the worst clubs with the best members! This book was a testament to that. I appreciated how honest Peggy was with her experience. She spoke to how hard it is to keep a marriage alive as you are navigating fertility, how hard it is to turn your brain off even though you need a break, how numb and empty you can feel after a loss, how Western cultures don't have any kind of ritual or remembrance practices for lost pregnancies and all sorts of other messy realities that come while trying to start or grow a family. It all resonated with me and reminded me that while this journey feels lonely, I'm not alone in my experiences.

If you are looking for camaraderie in your own fertility journey, I highly suggest picking up this book!🫶
