Do you remember when @its_time_to_show_off_watches did his #itstimetohomage series? Pepperidge Farm remembers. It was an awesome series, but who shall homage the homage-er? Homagist? Homagineer?

So today I’m doing an homage of an homage, my best impression of #TheKingOfHilariouslyLongHashtagsAndWittyCaptions doing an impression of the king of reflections and puddle shots himself, @barrybouquet. I hope I do them both justice.

It’s monsoon season here in the Philippines and my son’s had more online classes than on-site classes since the school year started, which is starting to feel like home-schooling with extra steps. I might as well get some good shots while the sun is out for the one hour it isn’t pouring this month. Here’s my DW-290 bravely testing the limits of its 200m water resistance in a shallow puddle.

The first shot has the flecto, the second shot has the ‘flection, and the third shot has a bit of both. I totally didn’t just take a bunch of photos and had a hard time deciding which one to post, it was definitely my plan the whole time.

DBC-610 DATA BANK "676"
Released in the late 1980s, the Casio DBC-610 was marketed as a "Databank Calculator Watch", which is exactly what it sounds like — a wrist-mounted Rolodex with a number pad. It’s part of Casio’s long-standing DBC (Databank Calculator) line, aimed at people who wanted to store names, phone numbers, and do quick maths without digging through their fanny packs.

This thing could store 50 contacts (with name and number!), do 8-digit calculations, and even had dual time, daily alarms, and a stopwatch. All packed into a lightweight stainless steel or resin case, complete with a bracelet that somehow screams “future” and “dad tech” at the same time.

Casio Solar Wave Ceptor 📻

One of the things I enjoy about collecting watches is realizing that interesting horology doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive or mechanical. The Wave Ceptor is a perfect example.

This is a solar-powered, radio-controlled Casio. Instead of relying solely on its internal quartz movement, the watch can receive long-wave radio signals carrying atomic-clock time data and automatically correct itself.

The technology behind it is pretty fascinating. There are six major transmitters used by compatible Casio radio-controlled watches: one in the United States (WWVB in Colorado), one in Germany (DCF77), one in the United Kingdom (MSF), two in Japan (JJY), and one in China (BPC). Depending on the specific Casio module and your location, the watch receives the appropriate signal and synchronizes its time.

The U.S. transmitter alone has an approximate reception radius of 3,000 km, while the European transmitters reach roughly 1,500 km and the Japanese stations approximately 1,000 km. Reception depends on location, buildings, weather, interference and even time of day, which is why these watches commonly attempt synchronization when conditions are favorable.

And because it’s solar powered, regular battery changes essentially disappear from the equation. Light provides the energy; radio synchronization provides the precision. Simple concept, impressive execution for less than $200 USD @casio_us
