A big day in Danville!

Governor Abigail Spanberger visited the River City today to announce Virginia’s first-ever Director of Outdoor Recreation, appointing Heather Barrar to the new role.

While in Danville, the Governor toured the new Riverfront Park and highlighted the city’s continued transformation of the Dan River waterfront through outdoor recreation, tourism, housing, and community investment.

It was a great opportunity to showcase Danville’s momentum — and the growing role outdoor recreation is playing in the future of our city, region, and Commonwealth!

Today, the City of Danville was proud to celebrate the dedication of a new public mural, titled The River’s Radiance, across from the Riverfront Park. The vibrant artwork was created by artist Jon Murill and features dragonflies, river reeds, and a great blue heron inspired by the beauty and wildlife of the Dan River.

This newest addition to Danville’s public art collection reflects the power of community partnerships and a shared vision for creating a vibrant place for future generations. Click the link in our bio to learn more about the project and the people helping Danville shine. 🌟

THREE SISTERS MARATHON AND 5k RECAP!

This race is just a can’t miss for me in my calendar now. Even though this summer of training was pretty rough to say the least, there was no way I could turn down the hospitality, grit, and joy I get racing in Danville. This place is truly one of a kind and I feel so honored to get to spend time and challenge myself here.

@mossmountainoutfitters

Things kicked off Friday night with the 5k! Originally I was going to push cooper in the stroller for this, but he and Tommy stayed home for some extra rest. My goal was to hit ~ half marathon pace effort and just shake the drive out of my legs, but that effort ended up being much faster than I expected!

I finished in 18:13, first female! Given the next to zero speed work I ran all summer, I was thrilled with how smooth and easy that felt. And what a gorgeous night to be outside enjoying Danville’s newest park!!

Then it was on to the marathon! I was sweating just standing on the line, so I knew it was going to be a tough day. This race was four laps and *1,600 feet* of elevation gain…so I prepared myself to suffer lol. The first two laps were rough - I threw up just before mile 4 and wondered if I’d even make it to 26.2. Thankfully all it took to quiet my stomach was some Gatorade. Since both the half and the full ran the same loops, there was always someone on the course to cheer for (and to cheer for me!)

On the last two laps I really focused on controlling the effort - I wanted to finish strong and pass as many guys as possible lol. By this point, there were a few cheering stations cheering my name which was REALLY fun. It made me feel like I was racing in my hometown - at one point I heard @nana.mama.nurse.business_owner and there was no way I could keep the smile off my face!

On the last lap I saw one of the hand cyclists and a racing chair pushing up the final, tough hill and I was just in awe. When I hit that hill - at mile 25 - I summoned all the strength I had left to not walk (lol) and ran up it - passing the second place male on the way. I was now second overall!

AND ON TO THE FINISH!

I finished first female, second overall in 3:09:50! This was my slowest mara

Coming in at third place…

The City of Danville, Virginia and this beautiful installation featuring our all-new Signature Series Signature Round 40"! 💫

“We were looking to incorporate annual color into a focal corner of our new park and also serve as a physical barrier for vehicles. The new Signature Series planters have more than exceeded our expectations. They have met the requirements we needed for the corner area of the park and also serve as a vibrant welcome as visitors use our park. The watering capacity also provides us with reduced maintenance and upkeep.”

Congratulations to the City of Danville on taking third place! 🎉

Two winners down, two more to go… 👀 Stay tuned!

My new mural: “The River’s Radiance” brings a new vibrancy to Danville’s Riverfront walk. This 200 ft wall was inspired by a family friend whose personality always shines with true radiance! Her expression partners the themes of flight and a youthful spirit for the outdoors and the nearby river. As I’ve said, painting real people adds so much to a piece of public art. This mural brought me so much joy to paint and I hope it brings the Danville community that same joy for years to come.
