Fastest Known Times have always been about something simple: riding your own ride, on your own terms, against the clock rather than against a peloton. That ethos makes FKTs one of the most accessible forms of ultra-distance cycling. Without the barriers of race entry fees or fixed start dates, riders can choose when to take on a challenge, ride at a pace that suits them, and define success in a way that feels more personal. For many riders identifying as FLINTA – an acronym originating in German for women, lesbians, intersex, non-binary, trans and agender people – that flexibility can make all the difference. We recently caught up with three FLINTA riders in the ultra distance community to discuss the subject - Nichola Cecchi, Carolina Kappes and Nicky Shaw. Here we pose a series of questions to unpick their personal perspective and thoughts on why FKTs matter for FLINTA riders. In this changing landscape of the ultra distance scene this is a really important topic. 💥New FKT💥 Route: Mirada Circular - Seis Caminos Distance: 225 km Time: 26h 31m 35s Congratulations to Nichola Cecchi (@playitfaster) who has recently set a new FKT on the Seis Caminos in the solo non-binary category! A new addition to the FKT route collection, Seis Caminos is a circular route of 225km which runs through the mountains which form the valley defining The Bierzo, an ancient region in Northwest Spain. An excerpt from @playitfaster’s ride report: ‘’It was stunning climbing into this otherworldly, transhumanist landscape with the sun rising above the towering geological formations. I reached the summit and from here had only one additional small climb and several kilometers of bushwacking through intermittently lost singletrack to arrive back at my starting point. I had initially thought I might complete the route in 14-16 hours, but the difficult singletrack sections, unrelenting elevation gain, navigational challenges, and the electrical storm had turned this into a 26 1⁄2 hour epic. On one hand, I think it should be quite easy to beat this time, while on the other I think this is a beautifully difficult route for which the correct bike does not exist, and will challenge whoever takes it on in unforeseen and unforgiving ways. But what a prize the experience, the views, and the ripe wild cherries were.’’ #fastestknowntime #dotwatcher
