Po B. K. Lomami is the recipient of the 2026–2027 Jeune tête d’affiche contest! Their work 𝘌𝘯𝘥𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 08 (𝘈̀ 𝘭𝘢 𝘥𝘦́𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦) is featured on the poster of Dazibao’s annual program. The posters are going fast, they can be picked up during the next visit to the gallery!

𝘌𝘯𝘥𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 08 (𝘈̀ 𝘭𝘢 𝘥𝘦́𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦) responds to the sensations of suffocation, drift, and abandonment that accumulated during a short period in which the artist lost several family matriarchs in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is part of a series documenting a cycle of performances titled 𝘢𝘬𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪 33, in which the figure Batamu emerges from a deep sleep into an unknown state, unearthing memories and grief that span from childhood to the present.

Day 13 : From Palestine to Sudan, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Montreal.
This global context—still marked by repression, forced displacement, looting, and genocide—makes dialogue and education for the younger generations all the more necessary.
This year, we were fortunate to welcome three exceptional panelists and activists: @duhaelmardi1 @pobklomami and @nellybassily , who joined our campers to discuss current events and solidarity movements for Sudan, Palestine, and the Congo in small groups. Each group then presented to the rest of the Freedom School what they had learned and, most importantly, why it was important to pay attention to these current events.
Although it can be intimidating to discuss such serious topics with our youngest students, providing them with the space to ask questions, make connections to their own realities, and—above all—understand the workings of the world they inhabit is essential for developing their critical thinking and fostering their agency. It also serves as a reminder that no revolutionary movement can succeed without a transgenerational approach. We won’t change the world without considering its future—and they are our future.

Freedom School is made possible thanks to financial support from the @centrevillemontreal and the Black Communities Foundation, with partial support from the Government of Canada @fdnblkcomm and the Government of Canada @patrimoine.cdn And also SHIFTConcordia

In July 2026, I spent 4 weeks in Montréal, Canada as a curator in residence with Nigra Iuventa, hosted at Fonderie Darling.

My research centred on new iconographies of Blackness: how images of Black life and Black experience are being created, circulated, and contested, from Accra to Montréal and the spaces between.

Thank you @nigra_iuventa and @fonderiedarling for the time, the space, and the trust.

Follow @thisnobeart for more from the art world in West Africa and beyond.

“Po B. K. Lomami’s iterative and interactive artworks visualize and materialize how time loops and stretches when white normativity is refused and disability, queerness, and Blackness serve as the organizing principles of social relationships and infrastructures. Lomami leverages durational media to create installations that unfurl in and as crip time, swooping gracefully from the intimate and embodied to the structural and conceptual.”
