POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

OG LA Tech Founders who've been part of the local ecosystem for more than 15 years shared their stories at our Digital LA panel at the Clubhouse in Santa Monica during Tech Week LA.

Speakers discussed trends in the LA tech scene and shared their experiences founding multiple startups.

Elvina Beck described how she founded @PodShare, a network of clean affordable hostels for travelers, digital nomads, students, and groups who want a stay with a community feeling from a few days to a few months. She founded her first location in 2012 in Hollywood. Since then, she has grown to now six locations in LA, San Francisco, San Diego, and Santa Barbara.

With her real estate and hospitality experience, Elvina has just launched her second startup: Deadline Travel. This site lets you bid the price you'd like to pay for a hotel. If the hotel wants to match it, you win your bid. Follow @deadlinetravel.

Mike Prasad described his first LA startup venture: helping the Kogi BBQ truck use Twitter, just as it was starting to be used widely in 2008. Founded in Los Angeles by Mark Manguera, Caroline Shin, and Chef Roy Choi, the Kogi BBQ truck pioneered the modern food truck movement by leveraging Twitter and text messaging to let followers track its route, turning social media into an essential tool for street food marketing.

Mike is now working on his latest venture: Common Space. It centralizes member-based organizations' digital needs (including website, newsletter, ticketing, and social media) all into one platform.

Speakers also shared how they raised capital, hire their tech teams, and launch their startups. Common Space developers use AI to help them code, getting the job done faster.

We’re hitting the streets of Los Angeles to meet the founders, makers, and small business owners building something meaningful right here in our communities.

Our next stop? PodShare 🩷✨

Sometimes, the best businesses start with a simple question: What if there was a better way?

For Elvina Beck, founder of PodShare, that question was about housing.

What started from an idea during the 2008 recession grew into a new approach to shared living creating affordable spaces where people could not only stay, but connect and build community. Since launching in 2012, PodShare has transformed overlooked spaces across California into co-living homes.

But PodShare is about more than a place to sleep.

It’s about the people you meet, the community you build, and rethinking what a space can be. From converted churches and former studios to community dinners and shared living spaces, Elvina has continued to evolve the idea while staying rooted in connection.

And after more than a decade of building, adapting, and even navigating some of the business’s hardest moments, Elvina’s advice to entrepreneurs is simple:

“If you have any idea, just do it!” ✨

So we’re taking you inside PodShare to see the people, spaces, and ideas behind the business and what it really looks like to build something from an idea into something that lasts.

Come along as we experience entrepreneurship in the wild. 👀

In April, I had the chance to join @grid110 as a Mentor in Residence, and I was SO excited.

And then, a few weeks into the program, I broke my leg and ended up needing emergency surgery.

Definitely not part of the plan.

I suddenly had to rethink what showing up as a mentor was going to look like—and get comfortable admitting that I just wasn’t at 100%.

I wasn’t even at 50%.

It’s a bit terrifying to admit that, especially in the very competitive world of business development.

But everyone at GRID met me with so much grace.

That ended up being one of the biggest lessons I took from the experience.

Our 100% changes every day.

Sometimes we have more to give. Sometimes we have less. And that’s okay.

I came into Grid110 expecting to be the mentor, but I learned a lot, too.

I’m so grateful to the Grid110 team and all of the incredible founders I got to work with.

BIG thank you to my mentees @podshare @dolphinuswimschool @infiniteflowdance @mojavemallows and @pickfordmarket

Been There Stories: Fatlip (The Pharcyde)

We took the Been There festival straight to the heart of The Esperanza Community for a night we’ll never forget! 🎤✨

Hip-hop legends @thepharcydelives and Austin heavyweights @brownoutband rocked a historic set specifically for the residents at this amazing transitional housing village developed by @toofound. Together, we didn't just lift spirits, we helped raise over $1 million to keep the mission moving! 🚀

While the vibes were funky, Fatlip (@ilovefatlip) slowed it down to share his personal "Been There" story with us. It’s all about showing up, giving back, and having a blast while doing it.

Catch the full vibe at beenthere.org.

2016. What a year. Fun memories. Crazy experiences. Amazing friends. Delicious food. Top notch tunes. Classic photo filters. Here’s and cheers to more of that energy in 2026.

I traveled near and far. I thought I’d literally never come back to the states permanently. And then I ran out of money and did. It was a fantastic year. A hard year. A year things changed. It all felt hopeful and progressive until it didn’t. And yet we’ve found paths forward as individuals and the collective. I loved 2016. I had the best time, and I also cried a lot. I did things that my 34 year old self would likely collapse or die from doing, and then I’d get up and do it all again the next day. Or I’d just be horrified and terrified by my 24/25 year old self. And also so proud of her. I love her. She’s me. All that she did in 2016 brought me to 2026 and I couldn’t be more grateful. #2016 #2026 #millennial #nostalgia #valencia
