POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Unless you’re already bought into the allure, stage storytelling can seem like a strange way to spend a Tuesday evening.

Why tell your story on stage?

I get asked this now and then, especially when I’m being a story pusher (which feels like my actual full-time job now). The answer is nuanced and changes for each storyteller, but these are the recurring themes I hear from story veterans:

🎤 It’s a way to meet new people.
Making friends as an adult is hard work. But when we’re returning to the same place over and over again, and with the added vulnerability of sharing our experiences on stage, it’s so much easier to make connections with strangers.

🎤 It’s great public speaking practice.
We encounter public speaking all the time. PTA meetings, work meetings, neighborhood events, accepting awards — all of these count. Telling your story on stage gives you a chance to engage in public speaking without the stakes.

🎤 It’s healing for you and for the audience.
When we’re telling a story, we’re letting the audience experience it with us. When we’re hearing a story, the same thing happens, in reverse. In an age when smartphones dominate our lives, events like the Salem Story Series invite human connection again. We can all use more of that.

See you on stage! 🧡

Verse/Visual 2024 Creator Spotlight - Ryan M. Valentine @poetry_comix
Ryan Valentine is a New England cartoonist who is the principle creator of Poetry Comix, a web series that updates weekly. It can be found on Webtoon, Instagram, Cara, and Facebook. A Poetry Comix graphic novel was published by Source Point Press in 2020; a follow-up collection is forthcoming.
Ryan was a happy surprise to the Verse/Visual team last year when he arrived on the scene with his smart, innovative and beautiful cartoons. After a year of seeing his work, we still can’t get enough. He’s a must see V/V creator. Thanks again for being a part of V/V, Ryan! 🐦‍⬛
