E.E. Cummings’s “[i carry your heart with me(i carry it in]” is one of the most beloved love poems in the English language — and these final lines are the reason why. Cummings takes something as small and ordinary as carrying someone close to you and widens it until it holds the whole universe: roots, buds, trees, stars. By the time the poem returns to its opening line, “I carry your heart,” the phrase means something larger than it did at the start. Read the full poem at poetryfoundation.org.

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)
— E.E. Cummings, “[i carry your heart with me(i carry it in]”

My most autumn-equinox-coded poem.

Darkness, error, yellow leaves, quotation marks, confession, escape.

As the days grow shorter and one year gives way to another, it’s natural to pause and take stock — not just of what we’ve done, but of what we’ve left undone. In “The birthday of the world,” written for the Jewish High Holidays, Marge Piercy turns that reckoning outward, asking not just how she’s grown, but how she’s shown up: for peace, for freedom, for others. Read the full poem at poetryfoundation.org.

How much have
I dared in opposition?

How much have I put
on the line for freedom?
For mine and others?
As these freedoms are pared,
sliced and diced, where

have I spoken out? Who
have I tried to move?
—Marge Piercy, “The birthday of the world”
