Seven men are accused.

But this story was never just about seven men.

It is a story about a world where violence against women and girls remains so common that we have started treating it as inevitable.

It is a story repeated in every country, every city, every community.

In homes.

In schools.

In university campuses.

In workplaces.

In refugee camps.

In war zones.

Behind closed doors and in public spaces.

Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread human rights abuses in the world.

Yet women are still expected to carry the burden of preventing it. Violence against women and girls is not a women’s issue, it’s a societal issue.

Women have been speaking for decades, and we are TIRED. Violence against women will only end when men and boys challenge it.

In their friendships, their WhatsApp groups, their locker rooms and their homes.

And to Jane and every survivor; we hear you, we believe you, we stand with you and we will never stop fighting until violence against women and girls is no longer a statistic, a headline or an inevitability.

A year ago today, as the government announced it would lower the voting age to 16, we launched the Roadmap to Votes at 16.

📘 Supported by 40 organisations across the @Democracyclassroom Network, the Roadmap set out recommendations to make lowering the voting age meaningful:

1️⃣ Establish a minimum entitlement to democratic education
2️⃣ Support educators and youth practitioners to deliver excellent democratic education
3️⃣ Modernise the curriculum
4️⃣ Expand opportunities for young people to engage, lead and influence
5️⃣ Support campaigns to encourage youth engagement

A year on, here’s what’s happened since:
The bill lowering the voting age was introduced to parliament in FebruaryThe Curriculum and Assessment Review committed to strengthening media literacy and making Citizenship education statutory in primary schoolsThe Department for Education’s new Enrichment Framework named Civic Engagement as one of the five key areas to support schools and colleges inThe Government’s Youth Strategy promised to ensure young people have the support they need to engage in democracyA new inquiry from the APPG for Schools, Learning and Assessment drew on our recommendationsThe Roadmap has been downloaded over 3000 timesA speaker in the Canadian Senate gave a shout-out to the Roadmap

@politicsproject are running a new training for youth practitioners: Conversations with Politicians 📣

👉 This training supports youth practitioners to invite politicians into their youth space to talk with young people.

For many young people this may be the first time they meet a politician, so getting it right can play an important role in shaping how they understand politics and their place within it.

The real losers of all the prime minister changes aren’t just business/allies of the politician or the politician themselves but us.

Those who finally get a conversation with a minister and then 6 months later they change and you have to once again persuade (which for me is a no brainer) on why we need to change the children’s act and get better support for children’s of addicts and the cycle repeats.

I’m exhausted. I’ve been really lucky that my most recent MP has been an advocate and tried to get my seat at the table. I’ve sat in front of a minister in children’s services who to be honest sold me a dream, a “seat at the table” of social care reform, for me to send 12 chasers with no reply.

I was successful in changing talk to frank, but I wasn’t able to influence on rolling it out to teachers etc.

It feels everything is the bare minimum and I don’t know how much fight I have left in me. I always think of the diagram in the post below of somebody digging and just as they are about to give up they strike gold.

My gold is change, and I don’t think I can ever truly influence that. I know I’ve spoken with people and had so many conversations but real change that affects the children of tomorrow just seems unreachable.

I wish matters weren’t used as a political chess play, but people just advocated for what they think will make a benefit to people.

Stimulating workshop today by @politicsproject filmed by ITN!

All about the lowering of the voting age to 16. There was some disagreement if this was a good thing but all agreed the average age of politicians should be lowered!
