Feeling a little verklempt as I announce THE MIDNIGHT RACE!

I first started dreaming up a story about a girl interacting with the animals of the Chinese Zodiac during the Covid-19 pandemic; I wanted young AAPI readers to feel pride and curiosity in their culture at a time when they desperately needed it.

And then, it became a story about fighting through adversity and having a madcap adventure, even when you don’t know what's waiting for you at the end. So excited for all of you to read.

I’m so grateful to @annmarie.wong and @kate_a_farrell for championing this story and patiently helping me work out the logic of a graphic novel in every way possible, @mollykh_tba for being amazing (as always!) and @polymorphin_ for gamely agreeing to lend her brilliant skills to the project.

I’m also SO grateful for friends like @caseyklyall @brandonhoangwrites for happily sharing their graphic novel projects with me, as I fumbled my way through my first few drafts. This book wouldn’t exist with you guys. ❤️

The cover of GHOUL SUMMER, my next solo middle grade out September 2 🕶️👻☀️! Art by Lauren Dimaya @polymorphin_ design by Andrea Vandergrift, @andvan19

About GHOUL SUMMER:
Barnaby had grand plans for his summer. He should’ve been spending his days watching movies and gaming with his friends. Instead, his parents drag him to the boring beach town of Sunnyside to help his grandpa move.

Just when he thinks this summer can’t get any worse, a ghost boy named Maxwell shows up in their vacation rental home to kick Barnaby and his family out.

Barnaby tries everything to get rid of Maxwell on his own. But when his attempts fail and Maxwell actually becomes stronger, Barnaby realizes that there’s only one solution to his ghost troubles: helping Maxwell figure out his unfinished business. If he doesn’t, the ghost might ditch the rental home for Barnaby’s body instead.

With the clock counting down to the end of the trip, Barnaby is forced to enter an uneasy truce with Maxwell to find the truth—or be haunted forever.

❤️“So, what?” he asks. “You want me to quit politics and go become a princess? That’s not very feminist of you.” “That’s not how feminism works.”

🤍”Straight people, he thinks, probably don’t spend this much time convincing themselves they’re straight.”

💙”With me it is quite stark: I miss you even more than I could have believed; and I was prepared to miss you a good deal.”

I can’t believe it took me so long to read this! I hated having to put it down and it sucked me in every time. I was giggling at so many of their interactions and loved how they both had to slowly work out their feelings and how to navigate the difficulties of their relationship and how it plays into their lives.
