My Aussie friend @kennedy7504 just sent me this photo and oh my God, this is truly a trip down memory lane. It’s 1989, I’m 22, living with a rock band in Australia, and my high school bestie Heather @positivelyproage has come to visit. All of which seemed totally normal.

I met Peter because he had met Heather somewhere in America, on a train or bus or something, and she told him her good friend was moving to Australia. He gave her his number for me, I actually looked him up, and he became one of my closest friends, as did his wife, Gillian Kane. @kanegilly

The blond guy with his arms around me is my good pal David, the drummer. The band was always making fun of his unfortunate mullet, but he was an amazing drummer. Good Drummers are hard to get! Also, he was another friend’s boyfriend.

My future husband, Paul, is the dark-haired guy in black behind us. It looks like he has glasses on, but those are scratches on the film. He did not wear glasses. Paul, who had recently broken up with his girlfriend, was the bass player and still just my friend. That stopped being true at about 11 p.m. that night.

Mark, in rust, played keyboards, and John was the lead singer. Paul later became the singer and guitarist in a different band in the ’90s. Photo by Peter, who is also in it with Gillian.

Happy significant birthday again, Heather. You were there the night the story of my marriage began, although none of us knew it yet. 💋 🇦🇺 🎸

P.S. My other roommate, S., who had a bit of a drug problem, is not pictured. I ended up using him as a plot device in my first book. I kept thinking, what if my mother got hold of him? She would straighten him out. He wasn’t in the band, but he was a very talented musician. Who liked heroin.

For the longer story, there’s my Australian–New York rock-and-roll novel, The Unexpected Salami, published by @algonquinbooks in 1998. My mother is in it, although I cough, “fictionalized” her. Anthony Bourdain liked it so much he reviewed it in The New York Times!

Happy Significant Birthday to my high school bestie Heather Davis Russell aka @positivelyproage , who I have known since 9th grade at Stuyvesant - a gazillion sleepovers and adventures, not all of which can be discussed publicly.

Her 18th birthday party was at Chippendales. That is all I am saying. Every gal who was there agrees the rest goes to the grave with us. This may involve a man named Mr. Wonderful.

We were in Mr. Dolan’s Forensic Debate class, basically a speech class, and somehow became the teen audience for Livewire, a TV talk show. Fred Newman asked for audience questions and Heather’s hand went right up. Suddenly she was talking on TV and I thought, wait, I can do that. So I raised mine too. We did several shows, and after that I kept raising my hand.

We both studied broadcast journalism, Heather at NYU and me at Syracuse, though she became a Spanish teacher, then a NYC high school assistant principal. She did Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and made me her Phone-a-Friend. They called while I was naked getting out of the shower, but yeah, I got the answer right. She was also on The Weakest Link — I looked it up, Season 3, Episode 73 — and now QVC.

And then Latin. Dr. Jamo Blake sometimes wore a toga (photo evidence included). First day he said the first two people who volunteered to do the dramatic readings all year would get a 100.

Heather and I looked at each other. Hands up.

All year we were Medusa, Echo, Narcissus, whoever. Dr. Blake gave us our 100s. Other kids were pissed off. Sorry. The man made an offer and we accepted it.

One more Stuyvesant mystery. The school had a print shop, and one day signs saying HEATHER DAVIS started appearing everywhere. HEATHER DAVIS. Everywhere. We never found out who did it. Whoever you are, it’s been 40+ years. Come forward.

When I was 22 and living in Australia, Heather came over to visit me. She is funny as hell, very smart and genuinely loves people, and people love her. People think I have this skill too, but you haven’t met Heather.

Happy Significant Birthday, Heather. I love you. I’d still take Latin with you, still be your Phone-a-Friend, and I am STILL not telling the Chippendales story. ❤️

Throwback Sunday! Sydney, 1989. My high school bestie Heather Russell—aka Heather Davis to Stuy High people—and me, both 22, on the steps of the Sydney Opera House. This just popped up on my feed and made me so happy!

I was living in Melbourne for a year after college with a rock band. Those experiences later found their way into my first novel, The Unexpected Salami (@algonquinbooks , 1998). Heather is not in the book! But! She came to visit, and we traveled all over Australia. What happened in Australia stays in Australia.

Our devotion to shopping was already well established, although we belonged to different denominations. I haunted vintage stores, Canal Jean and Unique Boutique. Heather had more expensive taste - she liked NEW goods and was always calculating how many jobs she would need to support her shopping habit. Our taste in bands differed, but we both loved Madonna.

I think we both got our fake IDs at the legendary Postermat on Eighth Street, where I also bought my ska buttons and Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush posters. I was a ska girl. At Stuy, we were q&a regulars in the audience of Livewire, Nickelodeon’s wonderfully crazy talk show for teenagers. It was practically a requirement if you were in Mr. Dolan’s forensic debate class. The guests included the Ramones, R.E.M., the Psychedelic Furs, KISS, and Frank and Moon Zappa. Yes, this was considered children’s television.

Heather was always much more outgoing than I was. She was also ARISTA, baby—the National Honor Society. Not to be messed with! Years later, she appeared on both The Weakest Link and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. When she did Millionaire, I was her Phone-a-Friend. I was naked, just out of the shower, when they called. True story! But I got the answer right!

Oh, the stories we have.

Now, after a long career as a New York City teacher and assistant principal, Heather who like me was also was a television film journalism major but at NYU - is heading into a new decade and documenting it her way. A new sensation! There is plenty of hard-earned wisdom. The shopping remains serious.

Will she win? I honestly have not been told.

Personally, I would not want to be up against Heather in a shopping contest. I’ve been shopping with her since I was 14 and she has some kind of shopping gene that is terrifying.

Remember this lady is a veteran of game shows and will bring her A game. Back in the day she was on Millionaire (I was her phone a friend and got called!) and also on the Weakest Link.
