I had the amazing opportunity to live at the @duvertalinfini chateau and study Iranian and Turkish music and instruments through their PluComp program. My piece for Ney, Tanbour, Tonbak, Viola, and Cello “Tog Tog Tog” was performed by the most lovely performers to work with at a museum and a church in rural East France. Thank you to Shahab Paranj @shahab_paranj , Reza Vali @rezacomposer , and Erberk Eryılmaz @erberk.eryilmaz for your insightful instruction and lectures. I am determined to see everyone again some time soon 🇫🇷🎶🫶

Another summer in Europe, made possible by the Du Vert à L’Infini music festival. It turns out that Turkish and Iranian music is incredibly fire!

PluComp Residency has become one of the highlights of the Du Vert à L’infini Music Festival. As we celebrated the 8th edition of the festival, we were also proud to mark the fourth year of PluComp Residency.

This year’s residency brought together a wonderfully diverse group of students who composed beautiful new works for an unconventional ensemble featuring ney, cello, violin, tanbour, clarinet, and Persian percussion.

Beyond lessons, lectures, and rehearsals, students shared meals, played sports, exchanged ideas, and, of course, danced together.

Watching this community grow each year is incredibly rewarding for me and Dr. Vali.

Special thanks to Dr. Erberk Eryılmaz for joining Dr. Reza Vali and me on the faculty, and to our wonderful performers, Maestro Khosrow Soltani, Sophie Williams, Mon-Puo, Kimia Jamshid, Gökberk Eryılmaz, and Melika Masoudi, for their inspiring artistry and generosity.

From last night’s performance at the @themuseumofkansascity - part of the improvised section of @postarabesque’s piece Lot’s Kiss.

Definitely an heartbreaking beautiful piece, that fuses microtonality, Arabic maqam scales, and jazz (wait for the microtonal blues lick ™).

@postrhythmic_arabesque ‘s piece - Lot’s Kiss.

Every new piece has its unexpected turns leading up to and on the premiere, but fusing Arab harmony, jazz improvisation, and classical performance is definitely a new one..

I think the artistic vulnerability throughout this whole piece that depicts the dehumanization of queer people throughout the Middle East juxtaposed with something as intimate as improvisation truly made this a special moment.

We’ve had such a fun time revisiting our accomplishments over the first five years. Thank you for your support and encouragement as we look ahead to the next five – and beyond!

Five years ago, we started with a simple promise – to elevate the music of gender-marginalized composers. It’s been so gratifying to see how many people we’ve impacted, and the ways in which our work is expanding the canon and changing perceptions.

Whether you are a composer, performer, database user, a concert attendee, a student in one of our education programs, or a supporter of our work, we appreciate you!

What will the next 5 years bring? With your help, we can continue to build awareness, alter the canon, and redefine classical music.

It’s not too late to make your birthday gift in honor of our first five years. And remember – every donation made to BI through the end of the day today, June 30, will be matched up to $10,000, thanks to our generous donor, Carl E. Tretter!

If you believe in our work, and want to support what we are doing, help us celebrate in style with your contribution to Boulanger Initiative. Click the link in our bio to make a one-time gift or, even better, set up a monthly recurring donation.

Thank you for being on this journey with us!
