Next up in The Onggi Journey: glazing and firing 🔥

After its epic journey through County Hall, the onggi by @kwakkyungtae is finally in place beside our kiln, now the next stage begins.

Glazing this piece is no small task. Every surface is carefully coated to enhance its natural form while preparing it for the intensity of the kiln. It’s a delicate balance of tradition, technique and a touch of unpredictability.

Then comes the firing. Our gas kiln “Barbara” will be pushed to high temperatures, where flame, heat and atmosphere work together to bring out rich tones and subtle variations unique to the process, that’s where the magic really happens.

From raw clay to finished vessel, we’re about to witness the final stage of its journey.

A huge thank you to @kwakkyungtae for going big with his pot, and to the amazing County Hall Pottery team for making it all happen 🔥

Another of the beautiful work from my master class with @countyhallpottery

This piece was not only repaired by but also made by @pottiny.by.ari

I loved having her around, not only because she was assisting me with setting up and cleaning, but her honesty about the process was really refreshing.

Kintsugi, especially traditional kintsugi, is not for everyone. Not because the work is bad, but because there are a lot of repetitive steps without much change. Which just doesn’t give the dopamine hit some people need from their craft. Arianna did a great job, and her pottery is beautiful! Now after giving it a try, we know that the hand cramping sanding might not be for her. Just like trimming pots on a wheel is much too dizzying for me.

Ever wondered how we moved this giant onggi made by @kwakkyungtae up to our kiln?

At County Hall, with over 30 miles of corridors, this was no easy journey. Created during a live demonstration by Kwak Kyungtae in March 2025, this amazing onggi perfectly matched the size of our large gas kiln and just fit through every doorway along the way.

Its journey took us through the London Dungeons, Shrek’s Adventure, across a Grade II listed mosaic floor, and finally out to the kiln courtyard.

A huge thank you to the amazing County Hall Pottery team who guided it safely every step of the way.

Stay tuned for glazing and firing next 🔥

Ever wondered how ceramic extruders work?

At County Hall Pottery the extruder is one of those studio tools that quietly unlocks a huge range of possibilities.

By pushing clay through shaped dies, the extruder allows you to produce consistent forms quickly and with precision. It’s perfect for making handles, hollow tubes, coils, square or hexagonal profiles, and architectural elements that would be difficult to form by hand alone.

Because the clay is compressed and evenly shaped, extruded forms can also be stronger and more uniform. This makes the tool incredibly useful for repeat elements in functional work, modular sculpture, structural components, or when you simply want clean, controlled profiles in your pieces.

It’s also a great way to experiment. Many makers use the extruder as a starting point for further manipulation — cutting, stretching, altering, or assembling sections into more complex structures.

If you’re curious to explore tools like this in more depth, our hand building courses at County Hall Pottery introduce a range of studio techniques and equipment to expand your making practice.
