Ever walk into a room grumpy, only to leave feeling like a weight has been lifted? Barley from the legendary underground band Rebreather reveals the secret catharsis found in their rehearsal space. After nearly three decades of making music together, the band has learned that the stress of daily life simply evaporates the moment they start playing. While the lead singer admits to using the mic as a personal therapy session, the whole crew finds release in the sheer intensity of their sound. I started a Substack. 🖤

It’s a paid subscription journal where I can go deeper than Instagram allows — writing about music, creativity, the music industry, independence, culture, social issues, politics, and building a life around the things you care about.

I’ve spent most of my adult life working in music from a lot of different angles: professional musician, session player, touring/hired gun, band member, teacher, mentor, artist manager, publicist, marketer, writer, host, and marketing director for music media outlets.

These days, I’m freelance and building my career on my own terms.

It isn’t always easy. Making a living as a musician and working independently is hard. But I’ve learned a lot about taking unconventional paths, making mistakes, finding opportunities, and creating a career without always following the traditional rules.

That’s what I want this Substack to be about.

I’ll share experiences, lessons, ideas, stories, and thoughts that I hope motivate and inspire people finding their own path.

There will also be exclusive behind-the-scenes content from studio/session work, rehearsals, soundchecks, touring, my bands, and other parts of my life in music.

Most importantly, I want this to be a place for connection. I love hearing different perspectives, meeting like-minded people, and learning from each other.

Yes, it’s paid. As a freelance musician and music professional, having people choose to support my work genuinely means a lot to me — and I intend to make it worth supporting.

The name “Don’t Got To Prove It” is a nod to CIV, the legendary New York Hardcore band, and their 1995 album Set Your Goals. Their music has been part of my life for decades, and the title feels especially fitting for where I am now.

My first entry is about punk, independence, mental health, choosing your own path, and letting go of the need to prove yourself to everyone else.

If you’ve followed my journey through music or the industry, I’d love to have you along.

Nobody is coming to build your career for you.

I’ve spent the last 30 years playing in bands, booking shows, touring in vans, sleeping in questionable motels, making mistakes, and figuring things out along the way.

A lot has changed in the music industry since I started playing in 1990. The tools are different. The landscape is different. But some things haven’t changed.

You still have to put yourself out there. Learn how to book shows. Build relationships. Figure out the business side. Show up for people. And create opportunities instead of waiting for someone to hand them to you.

Streams and followers are great, but they’re not a substitute for building a real connection with people who care about your music.

I wrote about 30 years of doing things the DIY way, what I’ve learned from the road, and what I think independent musicians need to understand about building a sustainable career.

If you’re in a band, thinking about touring, or trying to figure out your next move as an independent artist, this one’s for you.
