✨Get to know the artists from the [queerphoria] volume 5 in person exhibition at @urbanglass_nyc ✨ . . ✨Madi Weber (they/them) @mixnmad Beyond “This piece captures a moment of queer mischief and whimsy. The design was created through meditating on and experimenting with the adornment I want to see in the world. This work is made to be flexible and transformative through the multiple ways it can be worn. The long single cord can be wrapped around like a scarf, can be folded over to create a loop that the 2 beaded cords can be fed through to create a bolo-like design, or can be latched to the neckline to create a sort of beaded bow. As a genderqueer artist, this piece is intended to complement the outfit you are flexing or the gender you are expressing. It is not one single thing, it is so many things, with so many colorful components.” . ✨Marissa Erickson (she/her) @prairieteeth I don’t think I’ve ever noticed “How quickly the world can get so small, when I look at you, and you at me. How strange and scary and beautiful we become when we look this close. Here, I discover the same soft matter I see of you, is the same of me. Laughter. Grief. Time. Movement. Color. Wrinkles. Eyelashes. Kaleidoscopes. You and me. This work, functioning only when worn by two people, is meant to facilitate connection through the act of looking, of coming close to another person. The image through the looking glass, you and me, blown up in macro detail. While the piece is suspended between two faces, the glass can be manipulated—pushed, pulled, twisted—to change the view of the other person. The moving, breathing image of the other person can be sharpened, distorted, blurred, and disappeared. Through this dance, we are able to see in another’s face what we aren’t able to with just the naked eye, unveiling something new.” . Statement Swap! @xoblake_jonesxo made this comforting weighted shawl based on the following statement, written by @prairieteeth for an elegant stone-covered necklace: "Money has only ever flowed backwards for us--- There have never been family diamonds, or gold necklaces hidden away in a keepsake box somewhere; no money locked away for a rainy day. When rainy days come, we learn to like it. We learn to pull weeds when the earth is soft, plant seeds just before. We learn this is when the shiniest rocks float to the surface. When the Great Depression hit, my great-grandmother was only 12 years old. When there was absolutely no money, she learned the value of even the simplest of things---a sibling, a hot meal, the beauty of a rock found in a ditch somewhere, of being with loved ones while finding it. It has only ever been this way. Every summer, my grandmother and I go rock hunting together. It's the highlight of our years. We walk and talk about everything---train our eyes to look for light glimmering in the washes, take only the few that speak to us. This work is a wearable memento to my matriline, paying homage to the lessons I have been taught from generations of financial hardship---of valuing the beauty of the earth, of how walking alone and together is grief’s best medicine, and the power of looking for small beauties in a big hard world." A crocheted shawl with large, colorful stripes. Small garden stones are embedded across its surface.

Get to know the artists from the [queerphoria] volume 4 virtual exhibition!! . . ✨Marguerite Bones @marguerite.bones "Sharp, spiky, full gender blings. Through contact with the skin Bones’ jewels activate a sentimental and symbolic charge. Celebrating both vulnerability and strength, her pieces embody the underlying possibility of danger while inviting for freedom.” . ✨Marialena Bacha @marialenabacha_jewellery "In my work, I seek to honor and uplift the people and bonds of the queer community, particularly those who have been silenced, erased or are no longer with us. This project is a tribute to the Greek LGBTQ+ people who have come and gone. Regardless of how well we personally may have known an individual or not, their work, stories, and memories live on through those that remain. In creating this piece, I aim to reflect on the past, to honor the connections that once were, and to forge new ones by making visible the history of Greek queer lives." . ✨Marissa Erickson @prairieteeth “Marissa Erickson created this ring as an ode to the choreography of queer affection/touch. The ring is meant to be worn by two people at one time, while the pansy adorning the ring is meant to simultaneously veil the contact between two people, while also simultaneously drawing attention to the beauty of queer affection, and perhaps even the intimacy that can arise between two people when having to keep something hidden from view. Ultimately, the work brings visibility to the sometimes-intricate nature of queer affection/connection and the process of hiding/being visible.” . ✨Máté L. Mérey @merey_metaldesign "I consider it my professional goal to strengthen human connections through my work. Whether these are towards other individuals, nurturing small thoughts and memories, or towards connecting with their entire environment.” . .
