Fieldnotes: Chapter 1

Fieldnotes: Chapter 1 is an exhibition that emerges from Pramila Choudhary's fieldwork in the Thar Desert, western Rajasthan, India, where she engaged with Pattu weavers and explored the material practices, motifs, and embodied knowledge embedded in this hand-spun and handwoven wool textile tradition.

Born in India, Pramila Choudhary lives and works in Montréal, Canada. She is a textile artist, designer, educator, and PhD candidate in Geography, Urban and Environmental Studies at Concordia University, where her research-creation practice explores textile traditions, material culture, and sustainability. She studied Textile and Industrial Design at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, India, and at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU), Switzerland. Her current research focuses on Pattu, a hand-spun and handwoven wool textile tradition of Rajasthan, north-west India, where she has developed her research into hand-spinning and hand-weaving techniques through fieldwork and artistic experimentation.

Reflecting on my year as a Concordia Public Scholar (2025–2026). 🌿

A PhD brings both challenges and opportunities. For me, it has often been a journey of living with uncertainty—asking questions, embracing curiosity, and searching for new ways of thinking. The Public Scholars program gave me the space to explore those questions beyond the boundaries of academia.

Looking back over the past year, I realize how much it has shaped the way I communicate my research through collaboration, research-creation, public engagement, and making knowledge more accessible beyond the university.

I feel honoured to have been part of the 2025–2026 cohort and to now join the growing community of Public Scholar alumni who have paved the way before us.

One of the things I value most about Concordia is the freedom to shape a truly interdisciplinary PhD. My journey began as a Sustainability Ambassador, followed by the Sustainability Champion Award, and becoming a Public Scholar has been another privilege along that path.

Most importantly, I’m grateful for the wonderful cohort, faculty, and team who made this experience so meaningful. Here’s to continuing to build research that connects with communities and creates impact beyond academia. ✨

This was the spotlight event and one of my final curations as part of the Concordia Public Scholars Program (2025–26).

One of the greatest joys of this journey was bringing together the friends, artists, makers, and community I have had the privilege to build throughout my PhD. Seeing everyone gather in one space to share, create, and celebrate made this event truly special.

I am deeply grateful for the love, generosity, and joy that surrounded this program. Here’s to the friendships we built during my Public Scholar journey, and to the many more collaborations and connections that will continue beyond it. ❤️

Crafting Commons: Material | Making | Meditate ✨
What an inspiring day of conversations, creativity, and community at Concordia's Fourth Space. Bringing together artists, designers, researchers, educators, and craft practitioners from Canada, India, and the UK, we explored how making can become a space for dialogue, sustainability, care, and collective learning.

It was an honour to organize and co-moderate this symposium with fellow PhD scholar @meghachauhanm alongside an incredible panel featuring Sowparnika Balaswaminathan, @madan4meena, @rachelmachenry @studio_juhi, @kathleen.sheila.vaughan, @pragya57 @atelierb_amarie, @tuliatella (Amruthalakshmi Rajagopalan), @nadia.bunyan (@growing.arc ) Megha Chauhan, and Pramila Choudhary.

Thank you to our workshop facilitators, exhibiting artists, collaborators, and everyone who joined us. Your generosity, insights, and creative practices made this gathering truly special.
Craft reminds us that materials carry memory, making builds relationships, and commons are created through care.

At Projecthandstitch, we are grateful for a growing community of researchers, artists, makers, and organizers who continue to show up, collaborate, and share generously. While fieldwork, research, and community work often keep us busy, these connections make it all worthwhile.

As we wrap up the Moving Mending Circles Winter Series, I am reflecting on recent fieldwork in India, where the realities of climate change were impossible to ignore. It has been an inspiring season of learning through conversations on sustainability, mending, care, craft, and community.

A heartfelt thank you to our speakers: Dr. Ghada Soliman, Prof. Saumya Pande, Tricia Crivellaro, and SJ Jones, and to everyone who joined us along the way.

Special thanks to our panel moderators Molly Clair, Victoria MacBeath, Pragya Sharma, and Pramila Choudhary for facilitating these thoughtful conversations and exchanges.

Staying up until 4am for Scotland's ⚽️win, yay, meant I could also use the short June night to paint compound on cloths for cyanotype banners, hang them up to dry & tuck them away out of the light before dawn.
Today I used a cloth & exposed pieces of fab angelica on the garden plot. On the banner it feels like a view into an outer-space organic galaxy - or maybe an underground world of mycelium, roots & soil.
